With all the book covers and promotional use that photo has seen, she could be sitting on a fortune if she didn't sign a release.
She was 12 at the time of that photo. She was in a refugee camp because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. She married at 13 and has 3 surviving daughters. She lost one in infancy. She had no idea that her photo was so famous. She is illiterate and doesn't even ever go into any of the many stores that have her picture posted. The dude who took the photo went back and found her and has offered (I don't think personally) to pay to educate her daughters. That was her wish. They are also going to give her an all expenses paid trip to Mecca. Or Medina, I can't remember. I think she would look a lot better if she would just wash her face.
