In case you guys didn't see what happened in Colorado, I will try to summarize what happened.
Colin Powell's son is head of the FCC. A radio station in Pueblo, Colorado played an edited version of Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady" over the airwaves. The song which has been played literally hundreds of thousands of times on the radio had all curse words and negative words bleeped out.
The FCC, under Junior Powell, fined the radio station $7,000 for violating a newly enacted decency law for radio stations. The radio station is appealing the fine.
If the fine holds, artists such as Eminem will have their careers destroyed for all intent and purposes. With no radio play, his album sales will disappear. Whether you agree with the music or not, to fine EDITED versions is scary. Junior Powell was quoted as saying that even with the bleeped words children would know what was said.
Anyone else find this a little scary?
By the way, this is the verse that was reason for the fine:
"Sometimes I wanna get on TV and just let loose,
but can't, but its cool for Tom Green to hump a dead moose
'my bum is on your lips, my bum is on your lips
and if I'm lucky you might just give it a little kiss' (quoting Tom Green on MTV)
and that's the message that we deliver to little kids?
and expect them not to know what a womens *BLEEP* [clitoris] is?
Of course they're gonna know what *BLEEP* [intercourse] is by the time they hit 4th grade,
they've got the Discovery Channel don't they?"
Whether you like Eminem or not is not the point. The point is that Buddy Holly and Elvis were banned for bringing the Devil. The Stones and the Beatles currupted the youth of America. Children committed suicide because of Heavy Metal. Crimes were commited because of rap music. Now radio stations can't even play edited versions of songs?
I do hope the government picks something good for me to listen to tonight...
The irony of the whole fine is that the radio station is fined for words in which Eminem wonders why we can talk about violence on tv but can't talk about sex.
THE WORDS THAT WERE BLEEPED OUT WERE "CLITORIS" AND "INTERCOURSE" !!!!!
Not only can someone not say "clitoris" or "intercourse" on the radio under this new law, YOU CAN'T EVEN BLEEP THEM OUT!!!!
