Do you think Las Vegas is merely interested in collecting the juice, OR do you think Vegas would take a stand and try to "win" a game?

Thanks to anyone who responds.

I recently talked to Scott Kaminsky, the oddsmaker at Bowmans. He told me their goal is to balance the action.

On the course!
Las Vegas does not choose sides!

There is no gamble in the corporate scene, it is all bottom line.

In Art Mantaris' book "Superbookie", he says something to the effect of:

"I might book a large bet, thinking we have the best of it. If it wins, great! That's another bet in the can for us......If it loses, people upstairs are going to want to know why I took the action."

He is saying that he is in a no win situation by going against the rest of the houses.

That is why you see very little disparity in lines. As long as more than one person pays the losses at a book, these decisions to "take a chance" will not occure.

Balancing the book may be to goal in Vegas or even England (Bowmans), but some of the offshores definately take positions on games. That is why you see such opinionated lines. One of the biggest that does it is Pinnacle, but there are several others that do it as well.

A balancing act ? Yes
wink.gif

for instance the other day when the line swung (sp) Rams -4 to Rams +3 we checked the bookies comp and virtually NO money came /coming in on the Rams hence the fast swing to balance or attempt too. Regardless the bookies raked it in that game
wooooooohoooooooo

btw YYZ Art Mantaris left the Hilton Corp for my outfit : Station Casinos
We are glad to have him in Corporate status.
Now he will possibly play is "own game" ...

Consider this one....

Like 99.99999% of the betting public, I too, always thought that Vegas merely adjusted the line to balance the money and that was the end of it. Why do anything different? They're in a "no lose" situation.

My thinking changed on Oct. 14, 2000.

Before I go into detail, I have to admit it was TRULY a thing of beauty.

Every possible "emotional" condition was met. It was slicker than anything I could ever think of.

Please understand that I have no way to prove that Las Vegas actually gambled on this game. The only circumstantial evidence that one could say existed would be "it was rumored" the money poured in on one side and the line did not budge. Any veteran bettor would have asked, "why?"

THE GAME

Week #7.....purdue -3 vs. N'WSTRN (Homecoming)

N'WSTRN's last three games...

9/23.....WISC -16 vs. n'wstrn........n'wstrn outright 47-44
9/30.....MICH ST -12 vs. n'wstrn.....n'wstrn outright 37-17
10/7.....N"WSTRN -3' vs. indiana.....n'wstrn in a rout 52-23

Purdue's last three games...

9/23.....PURDUE -13' vs. minn........purdue 38-24 (cover by the hook)
9/30.....purdue -12 vs. PENN ST.....PENN ST 22-20
10/7.....PURDUE -1' vs. michigan....PURDUE 32-31 (win/no cover)

Purdue...after beating an average Minnesota team, Purdue heads to Happy Valley as a 12 point road favorite and gets their head handed to them (by a below average Penn State team), 22-20. THEN, Purdue plays a VERY PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL game against Michigan. Down 18 points at halftime, Purdue wins (no cover) the game on a last second 44 yd. field goal. It was the first time Purdue had beat Michigan in five years.

Perfect situation for a Purdue letdown.
N'wstrn on a roll.
N'WSTRN's HOMECOMING.
N'WSTRN a home dog !!!
Every tout in Las Vegas is screaming. "take N'wstrn plus the points."

The money pours in on N'WSTRN and the line doesn't move.

Result??????????

Purdue 41.......NWSTRN 28

That, imo, is when LV gambled and won.

They didn't do it carelessly.

"evening out the action" certainly means different things to different people. In college football some offshores sometimes get caught having to take 10 to 1 on one sided action. Nobody wants certain sides of some games. Unless the book lays off some of the action with some other book it sweats some games bigtime.

I'm not in Vegas and it would be completely inappropriate of me to fathom what's going on out there but.....I'm sure there's a couple of games each week which the house has to win. The books usually don't layoff unless they're playing with short money and that just isn't the case in Vegas.

Most games there's usually a two to one or a three to one ...one-sided action. It's just the nature of the beast. It's the reason that bookies go broke too. Look around....see all the books that have failed or been forced to consolidate. It ain't because they're taking equal action on both sides.

there is always a few games a week in fb that the book would like to win on.
where they are just onesided on even after a line move.
there is only so far you can move a number without somebody catching you in a bad spot.
when they get to that number then you will start seeing the -3-120 or so on go up. but in the long run they can't and don't get hurt out here. its to hard to get a large sum down and large isnot 5-6 dimes. they have it down to a knats nut out here when it comes to protecting themself.

Just read where that James pheonom in baskets isn't going to play football this year. Last year he played end and caught 42 passes for 820 yards. The small article said he could jump over the moon to catch the football. Just throught you might want to know.
