heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johny!!

that's right. I was just wondering everone's views and thoughts on this guy as I have just contracted him to be our company spokesman. I have heard conflicting reviews from people I have asked. I have been told things from him being a crook to being loved by the elderly. It is too late to back out of the deal, but I just wanted sum feedback. Any would be appreciated, as we negotiate a long term deal in another 90 days.

from an outsiders point of view, you can't get a more credible spokesperson for your company. from the public's point of view, i think he has an impecable(sp?) reputation. he was an announcer for carson, for sinatra, & a spokesman for budweiser. so he is experienced at kissing ass.

the only negative i heard about him was his desire to hit the sauce.

Gator I think it may depend on what age group your trying to reach. I would guess your company has a sweet spot they dont want to screw up. Then other areas you need to help. Not knowing what you company is all about. Im little help. But I do know Ed has peaked out with most. But still has high marks with the 60 and over group. I myself being 61 dont buy into him as much as I once did.. Ed Just reminds me of a old war horse that should retire for good. Most of his best worked ended 7 to 10 years ago.

I don't know what demographics you are trying to capture, but I cannot imagine anyone under 50 having much of an opinion of Ed other than that gained by the Reader's Digest Sweepstakes. That was a sham in many ways so I cannot imagine he would be thought of positively in that regard. In California, Ed has taken a few hits over his 2 million plus lawsuit over "mold" in his house that supposedly injured his health, his dog, etc. That may well have been true, however "mold" is the latest insurance scam in California that renters are using to sue landlords, etc. My recollection of Ed's image when he was Johnny's sidekick was that of a constantly drunk, almost buffoon-like promoter of his boss, laughing at every joke, funny or not. I don't know what you are pitching, but I would have serious reservations about Ed as a spokesmen unless you are selling Geritol, insurance, etc. - things that connect with the over 60 crowd. Remember, there were alot of people out there that bought subscriptions to Reader's Digest actually thinking they might win that sweepstakes.

Ed Mcmahon? What was Wilford Brimley too expensive?

I hope you are selling home meds or Depends adult diapers. His quazi celeb. status is lost on anyone under the age of 25.

Good Luck I hope it turns out well for you. The real question is what kind of product are you selling and what is your strategy. If you are a price leader then I can see the connection. If you are an innovator or you are in the computer field then...that's a different bowl of Quaker Oats all together.

Mail-I remember the publishers clearinghouse sweepstakes where he was pictured on the front and you had to send your personel info to the company for a chance to win 1 million dollars. The material stated that you would be registered for a chance to win 1 million wheater you purchased the magazines or not. This went on for several years so I bet he helped sell tons of magazines because of his "trusted" name. However, The way the wording went it was a little misleading in making you think that you already won the 1 million and you just need to send back the form. The sweepstakes is the only thing that I know of that may have caused mixed emotions to some.

TV- I also remember him from star search back in the day which was one of my favorite shows. There were many celeberties that became famous from that show like britney spears and drew carey.

I also remeber him doing all that long, hard, charity work raising funds for telethons.

In relationship to marketing and advertising, I dont think you could find a better guy than him because IMO ,people over 25, "especially the elderly":) , known of him as a great TV and Radio personality.
