Since I live in Mayberry, I've been unable to get sports info. sent to my pager. I recently read that my digital mobile phone has SMS(short messaging service) capablilities. Most of the portals on the net Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, etc..etc.. send this information to your phone absolutely FREE! Yahoo will even send you sports scores whenever a particular team scores.

Are there any better sites that provide sports SMS?

Funny that you would mention this. We just upgraded our phones this week. We are using Verizon Wireless in Phoenix. The phone that I have has web alerts, messaging from yahoo or wherever and web browsing.

So far I have tried yahoo and it works fine.
Although I am not sure if that is going to be any better than just logging onto the web periodically to check scores that way.

With web alerts and messaging we have 100 alerts/messages per month. Afterwards we will be charge 10 cents per message. Looks like that could be less cost effective than just logging on to check scores.

Sorry I don't have anymore helpful info. I am still learning how to use my new phone.

Oh.. yes.. Forgot to say. I can also place phone calls with it!

See ya

Would use it for times away from the computer. I noticed that Vegas Insider had a wireless service as well....

Hey Neemer... Just a few questions...

I'm currently looking at getting a new phone... You say that yours has SMS capabilities and that places like Yahoo etc send the scores for FREE... My question is,
do you just need a phone with those capabilities or do you have to pay a service fee to use those features as AZRUSTY said like first 100 msgs free then 10cents a msg after that??

Also any recommendations on a good phone? Or anyone else know any phones that could get these updated sports scores?

Thanks
Korn

I agree on the AT&T digital. I pay 59.95 per month (plus a bunch of add on taxes) for I think 600 minutes of anywhere in the US (all 50 states) time with no roaming charges and no long distance charges and unlimited messaging. Had it for over a year and been very satisfied.

I have not been all that satisfied with Yahoo alert. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't and it only notifies you of the score after every three innings. I am looking for a better score messaging service. I think I will check out the Vegas Insider thing you were talking about.

After seeing that vegasinsider had webphone info I looked at it last night. It seems to me that it does not offer web alerts or messaging. But you can access the sports scores through your phone web browser which may be good enough.

I am still just trying to figure out all the features on my Kyocera QCP2035a.

One other thing about the yahoo messages. It seems to me that I am getting DOUBLE messages which is annoying and if I were paying for them would be very irritating!

Korn...

Your phone has to be digital and not analog. Most of the phones nowadays come with both. You just don't see many analog phones being manufactured due to the low cost of transmitting digital signalss. Your mobile phone service must offer short messaging service in order for your phone to work. Most carriers are offering the service.

I'd suggest you go with a Nokia phone if you have a choice. I just bought a Nokia 7160, and I love it! Much much better than the Motorola Timeport I had. It is also much better than the Motorola Star Tac. You'll get much better results with the Nokia batteries vs. the Motorolas. The 7160 has a rather large screen which makes it easy to read messages. The Motorola screen is tiny and is hell trying to read messages and emails. The Nokia cost me about $100 bucks and it's worth every dollar.

My plan consists of: NO LONG DISTANCE which means no roaming, 450 minutes per month, voice mail, caller ID, call forwarding, and 50 free messages. After that, they are .10 cents a piece. All this for $42.95....
