Probable goaltenders: Johan Hedberg for Penguins, Martin Biron for Sabres.

The Penguins had a light, 45-minute practice at Southpointe yesterday morning. All players participated except C Wayne Primeau, who will have an arthroscopic examination of his injured left knee today. That operation will keep him out at least a week and possibly more, depending on what doctors discover. C Mario Lemieux (hip) skated with no difficulty, practicing for the first time without wearing a special-colored sweater to signify he is injured. He plans to return Saturday at home against the Blues. RW Aleksey Morozov (shoulder) practiced but did not make the trip to Buffalo.
The Sabres will be without LW Slava Kozlov (heel) tonight. RW Maxim Afinogenov (flu) and D Rhett Warrener (wrist) sat out practice yesterday at HSBC Arena but are expected to play.

For nearly a half-hour of the Penguins' session yesterday, Lemieux worked on half the rink with the first-team power play -- C Robert Lang, LW Jan Hrdina, LW Dan LaCouture, RW Alexei Kovalev and D Andrew Ference -- to point out shortcomings he has witnessed. Lemieux consulted with Kehoe and assistants Ed Johnston and Joe Mullen but handled most of the instruction himself. "He's the captain and the owner," Coach Rick Kehoe said. "He's done that before in his career, just helping the guys and giving a couple pointers. ... He sees a lot of things up in the box that happen on the power play where a play here or there can change things drastically." The power play was 0 for 6 in the 3-2 home loss to the Bruins Tuesday, often failing to gain the blue line. Kovalev, who shifted from point man to forward Tuesday, will work only the point tonight -- perhaps the center point in an umbrella formation -- to help move the puck through the neutral zone. Ference was added to the power play at the right point.

The defense-first system Kehoe had installed a month ago appears to have been scrapped for good. He dropped his 1-2-2 forecheck in favor of a far more aggressive approach Tuesday -- two men, sometimes three to the puck -- and liked the results, if not the defeat. The Penguins generated 30 shots, including a 13-11 edge in the first period. "We put on a little bit more pressure, and we had a few more shots, seemed to create more chances," Kehoe said. "I thought that was one of our better first periods in a long time. We're going to have to try to keep playing the same way and, hopefully, not make any mistakes."

The Penguins announced Thursday that Lemieux, who skated with the team this week, will return for a home game Saturday against the St. Louis Blues.

thanks rakman, good info...

more mont info

After playing the last four games on left wing, Yanic Perreault will be back at centre for the Habs tonight. He'll be between Mike Ribeiro and Richard Zednik while Doug Gilmour, the Canadiens' best player lately, will be back between Brian Savage and Oleg Petrov. Patrick Poulin will play with Andreas Dackell and Joe Juneau while Shawn Van Allen could play with Hossa and Odjick...The Islanders are one of the most aggressive penalty-killing teams in the league.

The Habs will have to be wary. They lead the league in short-handed goals (11) with Mike Peca leading the league in short-handed points with seven (four goals, three assists). Shawn Bates has three short-handed goals.

The Blackhawks will be looking for their first victory of the season over Columbus when they take on the Blue Jackets tonight (7:30) at the United Center. The teams have played twice previously this season, skating to a pair of 2-2 ties.

Both teams come into the UC having lost last night.

Chicago had its six-game winning streak halted by Colorado 7-3 in Denver, while Columbus lost its fifth straight road game in Washington 6-3.

The Hawks are 9-2 in their last 11 games with an overall mark of 25-13-8, good for second in the Central Division behind the Detroit Red Wings, while the Blue Jackets are 2-6-1 in their last 9 games, 11-24-6-1 for the season (4-15-2 on the road) and are at the bottom of the Central - in addition to being the lowest scoring team in the NHL.

Coach Brian Sutter is expected to go with Steve Passmore in goal tonight. Passmore is 1-2-2 and won his last start against Colorado (3-1 Dec. 27th). Ron Tugnutt (5-15-3) will probably get the call in goal for Dave King's team.

Sutter hopes defenseman Boris Mironov will be able to play after missing three games with a muscle strain. Kyle Calder was injured in the first period of the Colorado game last night and his status is undetermined.

According to linemate Tony Amonte, Calder was hurt when he was checked into the rear boards by Rob Blake. Amonte said Calder had a shoulder injury; coach Brian Sutter was under the impression it was a head injury.

Maxim Afinogenov will not play. Max was sent to the hospital this morning for tests to determine whether he has the flu. He has been feeling unwell for the past four days.

"We want to determine what is wrong with him," said Ruff. "We want to see if what he has is the flu. If he does, then we were told it would be highly contagious and we certainly don??t want to spread it to others on the team."

Rhett Warrener injured his wrist against Vancouver Tuesday night. He left in the second period and returned to the bench in the third but did not play. Rhett wants to play this evening but Lindy Ruff is uncertain how effective he would be. Warrener??s status will be determined at game time.

Lindy said this morning that Taylor Pyatt would take Afinogenov??s place with Tim Connolly and Erik Rasmussen. The Curtis Brown and Stu Barnes lines will stay the same. The fourth line will consist of Eric Boulton, Rob Ray, and Denis Hamel.

Predators defenseman Bubba Berenzweig will be out for at least one week after suffering a cut on his thumb that required 14 stitches.
Berenzweig cut himself on his skate blade during Tuesday night's game in Toronto on a collision in the first period. Robert Schnabel, a 6-foot-5, 232-pound defenseman, has been recalled from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League to help fill the void.
''[Schnabel] is a big body that we think has a chance,'' Predators General Manager David Poile said. ''Of all the players that we've called up, this is the guy we probably know the least about.''
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is scheduled to attend tonight's game.

Wild injuries: Defenseman Brad Brown will miss his eighth consecutive game because of a fractured left ankle. Left wing Cam Stewart (concussion) is out indefinitely.
Predators injuries: Defenseman Andy Delmore (hamstring) likely will return play after missing eight games. Enforcer Stu Grimson (concussion) is out.

info from last night calg/nj

info from last night calg/nj

The play that had Greg Gilbert and the rest of the Flames up in arms was New Jersey's back-breaking third goal, Scott Niedermayer's second of the night, late in the second period.

With the Flames down 2-1, Jarome Iginla was trying to skate out of his team's zone with the puck. Bobby Holik attempted to catch the league's scoring leader with a hip check but missed, getting him with a leg whip instead. Iginla went down, the puck went to Niedermayer and he tallied while the Flames were looking for a penalty.

"Probably 14,000 people in the stands saw it. Both benches saw it and the two referees didn't seem to be able to see it. It just amazes me," Gilbert said of the game officiated by Tim Peel and Rob Shick.

"We can accept missed calls but it's in clear view and you get the excuse, 'It's not my area,' or `It wasn't my call.'

"If they miss the call and admit they miss the call, we could accept that but they point the finger at everybody else and don't take responsibility for that. It's getting ridiculous," he continued.

"It's a 2-1 hockey game, both teams are going at it hard and it's a penalty. If we were to send a tape in, I'm sure those boys would be getting in (trouble).

"The game's changed and I don't know the direction it's going. I think it's ever since they brought in the two-man system. It seems like a tug of war between the two referees out there with guys waving off other calls and looking at the other to see if there should be a call. The one constant is the standard answer: 'It's not my call.' "

as always, when one of you guys watches a game, if anything jumps out about a certain official and what he is or is not calling, feel free to respond to these refs threads. the more info we have about what a ref may or may not call, well, it can only help us in the end...

about to head out of here ,good luck to everyone.

go b's

also with bettman in nash, anyone else like that over 5? maybe they call anything close in that one and there are a few pp's (both refs pretty dead middle, one is 16-16 o/u 5.45 gpg angus, the other 15-16 o/u 5.45, seen angus call a few, he is prone to raise it(his hand that is, not the roof) but of course the goalies in this game are important to know......

definitely a good spot to fade mont after the trip, isles need a win

i think the pitt/buf game will be interesting, talk about a huge game, these teams have to approach each game as a playoff game if they want to consider playoffs...pitt's new style will be interesting to note, trying to generate more opportunities and have dumped their old approach. but in the end do they still have enough talent. have not checked the line but if pitt is way up there, they might be a decent ML shot....(note buf's has a few out tonight or at least questionable)

what can i say, interesting slate of games, will be flipping around and enjoying it. hope you all do too, hope to post again before games start up............c ya
