Tiger still Masters ?chalk?
December 22, 2009
The embattled Tiger Woods may be taking an ?indefinite leave from golf?, but he?s still the favorite for the 2010 Masters.
Woods announced he?s leaving golf to help repair his marriage. That came after the discovery that Woods has been collecting mistresses like kids collect Matchbox cars.
However, recent media reports suggest his marriage to Elin Nordegren is over, and she could be moving with their two kids to her native Sweden.
If that?s the case, Woods should be back on the course sooner rather than later, and certainly before the Masters next April. Playing golf is the best way to get fans back on his side.
Woods had some sponsors drop him, and others scale him back. Nike, Woods? biggest sponsor, is sticking by him, and they will continue to as their golfing line depends on it. Nike certainly wants Woods to be playing in the Masters.
Woods also needs to play to keep his No. 1 ranking. If he sits out too long, Phil Mickelson will overtake him for the top spot. These two players have an intense rivalry, and Woods is not going to relinquish it easily.
Woods has four Masters? ?Green Jackets?, but the last one was in 2005. He finished sixth last year, second in 2008 and 2007, and third in 2006.
There is no guarantee Woods will win even if he does play, opening the door for others with favorable odds. That starts with the second-favorite Mickelson (+600), who won in 2004 and 2006. Padraig Harrington (+1500) is another to watch out for. He has never won The Masters.
