To scalp...or not to scalp...

That is the question

Over the last 4 years I've made a lot money betting the fight game. Other than live betting (which has been very profitable), this year has been a struggle to consistently bring in the cash. So I started scalping the big line moves, sometimes just one a week, sometimes up to 4 scalps a week. And I've been cashing between $50 and $100 a week without risking a damn thing. Sounds like small change but 100 a week brings in an extra 5,000 a year...risk free.

Anyway

The purpose of this post is to get some feedback on how I should handle this scalping situation in terms of posting plays here at mj's. Obviously I don't post a play if my intention is to scalp it later, I only post plays that I recommend. Here's the problem...

I try to get the opener of every fight, even if its 2 months away I want the original number. So I get my money down and come here to post the play in my futures so you can get close to the same line. Unfortunately there aren't many who will tie up money that far down the road, so instead of getting +230 (for example) they get +170 or less. If the line moves so much that the free money is too good to pass up...the smart thing to do is scalp. Unfortunately those who got on the play late will not be able to scalp and might lose money on the buyout. Either way they'll be pissed about me backing out of a play that they are on, esp if it ends up losing and I still make money on the scalp.

SO...

I could stop posting futures, but that will only hurt my loyal followers who get the same lines I do by playing early. And there's no way I'm posting a play at +170 when I got it at +230 last month.

I'm here to help and I don't like pulling plays that I recommend, but sometimes a line moves enough to set up decent cash without risking anything. Unless you're completely sure of your wager, the smart thing to do is scalp.

Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

Other than KOD, does anyone else have a problem with me scalping a posted play?

Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

A perfect example of this would be the Baldomir-Gatti fight...

I played Baldomir +400 and Baldomir +17.5 +135 when it opened at 5dimes. By fight night the line was down to Gatti -155.

It didn't matter how much I liked Baldomir and it didn't matter how much value my plays had, with that big of a line move the free cash was way too big to pass up. Hoping that most of my tailer's got a piece of Baldi at the big + money, I posted a small play on Gatti -155 to cover the potential losses. It was the smart thing to do regardless of the outcome.

However

I'm sure there were some who played Baldomir the week of the fight at +135 and they were probably pissed when I added Gatti -155

The only solution I can think of is putting a disclaimer in my threads stating that all plays are recommended at the posted price only. If the line has moved, ask me if it still has value at the current price before playing it.

OK I'm done

by all means scalp.....you deserve it....

you have the balls to post many, many plays.....keeps this place hopping...i appreciate it....

this is a fun place to shoot the shit about boxing...you`re a large part of that....

you know people will follow...for me,that`s really hard....i`m uncomfortable touting and possibly losing someone money(even though i do it time and again...lol).....

you can scalp and give an honest opinion on a particular fight....

your opinions are valued....

but,by all means scalp...maybe post the play with a date next to it....

that actually might be helpful to those that don`t catch lines aearly and are interested in line movement....

whatever...just keep things hopping....

I think posting with your specific intention of scalping later is the ideal scenario....or as you say, a basic disclaimer would suffice if every bet has the intention of a future scalp.

Thanks for your time and efforts.

A scalp is nice, but sometimes the line doesn't move in your favor. There is a risk involved. We both had Baldomir +400. Last week here in Vegas we had a nice free money play. The line off-shore was off by 60-80 cents. We took the free money.I think if ALL a guy does is scalp, it's too one dimensional. But I know the casinos here HATE a scalper, so it must be the right way to go.

any of us who take someone else's plays, regardless of how good they are takes responsibliity for themselves, a disclaimer is nice but it's still your own responsiblity. I would like to see your scalps, I'm still trying to learn to spot the potential free money plays.
