Top Seeds Still Standing

By SPORTSBETTING.com

Two rounds in and the and the big four are still standing?that?s not overly surprising as the number ones usually land in the Sweet Sixteen, but it?s this weekend that trouble starts for the big guns.

Seeded No. 1 in the Midwest, the Louisville Cardinals defeated Morehead St. (+21.5) 74-54, Siena 79-72 and is listed as the odds-on to make it to the Final Four from its region at ?170 at SPORTSBETTING.com.

The Cards? Sweet 16 opponent is the Arizona Wildcats and Louisville finds itself listed as a 9.5-point fave.

The two teams have met only once in the last few years, December of 2006 to be exact, and Louisville dropped a 72-65 decision to the Wildcats failing to cover as 3.5-point home underdogs as well.

Digging around online for numbers, it looks like Louisville head coach Rick Pitino is undefeated in Sweet 16 play amassing a record of 8-0 (dating back to his days at Providence). Louisville is 12-8 ATS in their last 20 games in March.

The last nine times Louisville has taken the floor as a favorite in March Madness they have rewarded their backers to the tune of a 6-2-1 ATS mark.

- Coming into the tournament as the best in the West, the UConn Huskies rolled over Tennessee-Chattanooga, covering as a 20-point fave 103-47 and defeated Texas A&M 92-66.

The Huskies are listed at +100 to make it to the Final Four and are a 7-point favorite against Purdue in the Sweet 16.

SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting 76% of all early action coming in on the Huskies.

While a No. 1 seed in this year?s tournament and a good basketball team overall, Connecticut hasn?t been the most profitable bet in the month of March going 4-15-1 ATS.

They are only 2-7 ATS in their last nine March Madness tilts.

In the Huskies? last 20 games when favored by 8-points or less, they are marginally profitable at 10-9-1 ATS.

- The Pittsburgh Panther?s journey to the Sweet 16 saw it defeating East Tennessee St. 72-62 and Oklahoma State 84-76 failing to cover at ?9, which leads to its next contest, against Xavier listed at -7.

Generally speaking Pitt has been profitable in March games going 11-9 ATS but it has dropped its last three-straight ATS and in its last six March Madness games they have gone 1-5 ATS.

The Panthers are the East region?s odds-on fave to make the Final Four at +100.

- The North Carolina Tar Heels entered the March Madness tournament as the South?s No.1 and have an easy ride to the Sweet Sixteen (dispatching Radford 101-58, covering as 25-point favorites and they beat LSU by 14-points in a 84-70 victory which enabled them to cover at 12.5-points).

Next up, the Gonzaga Bulldogs who are fittingly 8.5-point underdogs.

The Tar Heels have been miserable, going 3-9 ATS in its last 12 games when favored by more than 8-points, however they have also been a solid March Madness bet going a perfect 5-0 ATS in its last five tourney games when listed anywhere between 7 and 12.5-points and are 6-1 against the number in its last seven March Madness games when listed as a favorite.

UNC, like the other top seeds, is the odds-on favorite to make it to the Final Four from its region, the South.

While March Madness 2009 hasn?t been totally bereft of upsets, this is the first time in tournament history that the 1, 2 and 3 seeds from each region have made it to the Sweet 16.

Last year?s tournament also saw a first time all four of the top seeds advanced to the Final Four, will this year make it two years in a row?

Enjoy this week?s games.
