College Football: Week 2 trends

Miami was the neighborhood bully in the Sunshine State, winning 82 of 99 games from 1998 to 2005. The Canes have fallen on hard times, ending last season on a 0-4 slide in Randy Shannon's first year at the controls in Coral Gables and suffering their first losing record since 1997.

Shannon snapped up a lot of blue chip talent from South Florida high schools, but Hurricane fans are going to have to be patient. There's no substitute for experience, which Miami will lack in a number of key positions, most notably at quarterback, receiver and kicker.

The Canes' opened the season last Thursday with a blowout home win over Charleston Southern, 52-7. They step up in class this week, heading to Gainesville to face Florida for the first time since 2003.

The Gators have ruled the roost in Florida since Urban Meyer arrived on the scene and led them to a BCS title game win over Ohio State in 2006. Florida resides in the top five in most pre-season polls with Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow returning under center.

Meyer will also bring a very young team to the ball this season, especially on the defensive side. Florida's pass coverage was nothing short of a disaster last season and the front four is still a work in progress.

The Gators will be heavily favored to end their six-game losing streak against Miami. Meyer's marauders have cashed six straight as double-digit non-conference favorites and nine of 11 at home off a non-conference game.

The Canes' have come up short in eight of their last 11 off a SU win and they have stumbled in 12 of 17 ATS on the highway and lost eight of 10 straight up.
