2-3 yesterday 10-7-1 on the year...Let's turn it back to the winning side today...

SacSt +2

Wrong team favored here. Samford returns All-OVC J. Robert Merritt and the starting backcourt in Smith and Gulina. Filling in the departed frontcourt may be difficult for the Bulldogs especially this early in the season. Merritt will carry this team and for some games that will be all Samford needs.

This is not one of those games. SacSt loses Pugh (15ppg) but return the remaining starters including BigSky POY hopeful Jason Harris. Freeman is one of the best guards in the league and Bausley can score and rebound.

The Hornets have the advantage in size, experience and depth. Given that, I'll take the points anytime.

Texas -32

This is the third big chalk that I have taken this year. The other two did not do so well. Last night, it seems as if Duke came out believing their own press clippings and took them to midway through the first stanza to start to play. Give Boston their due, they scrapped and stayed with the No1 team better than anyone would have guessed.

That said, why would I lay another big number like this? Let me explain...

The Jaguars return only 2 starters in Alexander and Cipriano. Spivery, who was hired away from conference rival BamaSt is the 4th coach in 6 years. Southern will have to rely on too many newcomers to contribute early. Alexander is a good player...in the SWAC. Alexander can score some points...in the SWAC.

Texas...(go and read any preview magazine or online preview here...Gibson, Aldridge, Tucker...don't forget Buckman)...is ranked 2nd in one poll, 3rd in the other. I have not yet seen a preview mag picking them as the preseason number 1. I'll bet they probably haven't either. (Add you own cliche here..."Chip on their shoulder"..."Something to prove"..."Dissed"...wow, I never tried to spell that last one.)

Duke couldn't "blow out" thier opening cupcake. I can see a focused Longhorn team "putting the horns" to Southern just to prove a point. Like last night's game, the question here isn't CAN Texas blowout Southern. It is WILL THEY WANT to blow out Southern.

New Mexico St returns Trevor Lawrence and Mike Mitchell. It looks as though Duane John is not going to be back (violating team rules). Reggie Theus has his work cut out for him. Lawrence, at 6'11" 225lbs, will be able to work inside against smaller guys. The question is how effective he will be will a large, heavier body on him. Mitchell can score a little big also but defenses will be able to double down on the big man and will still keeping a man on Mitchell. New guys will have to step up.

The Bruins lost Dijon Thompson but return last year's super froshes, Farmar, Affalo and Shipp. Fey (7', 270lbs), Hollins (7', 225lbs), Mata (6'8", 235lbs) and Wright (6'8", 230lbs) give Coach Howland plenty of big guys for the paint. This Bruin team could suprise a few people and seriously contend with Arizona and Stanford for PAC10 title.

Bruins - good guard play, plenty of big men (especially 270lb Fey)
Aggies - very little chance tonight

The Mavericks have played better than most expected so far this year. Howell has been the main guy for TexArling and Thomas hasn't been a big factor offensively but is leading the team in rebounds.

Hines looked good in his debut yesterday and Hickman rejoins him today. Hickman's return should cut down on the turnovers that have plagued the Spartans this year (23 and 18 in first two games).

UNCG wins outright.

UCLA - As I was writing and rewriting, I deleted the part about soph Shipp being out. What I really missed was that Fey is out this game also. Doesn't matter...UCLA still rolls...
