Tuesday Morning Quarterback for September 18, 2007

The Undefeated

By SPORTSBETTING.COM

Looking back to find the last time a team like the Green Bay Packers started a season with a 2-0 straight-up record is a relatively easy task.

Heck, even the Detroit Lions stormed out of the gate in 2004 with a perfect score until mid-September and they are the least likely of candidates.

But there are 10 different teams with a 2-0 record in this early NFL season and while they don?t look all that fascinating standing alone, tear down the divisional boundaries and the walls that separate the conferences and look at the group as one big picture.

San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Houston, come on. Now conjure up pictures of the most famous quarterbacks for these teams.

Dallas (Aikman), Denver (Elway) ? We are re-living the Nineties!

And I know that Warren Moon never really played for the Houston Texans but you can bet that somewhere in America right now, there is a debate raging over who was better: Joe Montana or Steve Young.

- Only five of the undefeated teams are favorites this weekend and just two out of that group are laying more than a touchdown.

- Six of the 10 teams are playing at home and three of those games are divisional.

- And the guarantee that this list of ?1972-Dolphin? wannabes will be shorter in one week?s time? Four of these teams are playing each other on Sunday!

Please Do Not Adjust Your Set

As the weekly countdown to kickoff churns through the season for a football bettor, putting stacks of info together about all the games takes time and effort. But with all the data that?s available to sports bettors today, learning how to interpret the rules of the game is often just as important as the rules themselves.

Just ask Bill Belichick.

When the weekend hits and the games get underway, there are times we?ll find that things aren?t quite going according to plan. Not your betting plans, not the gameplan and certainly not the plan for a quarterback that just threw his third INT of the first-half.

During the break we will often hear television commentators talk about adjustments a team is going to have to make if things are going to turn around and as a bettor, there are a few adjustments we need to think about making ourselves.

These are not the kind of adjustments made famous by baseball players between each and every pitch of their one hundred and thirty-somethingth game of the season, this is serious.

Do you let your wager ride, assuming a head coach that was so obviously unprepared after six days of work getting ready for a game can somehow have a revelation during a 15-minute half-time.

Or do you make a new bet at the half, a hedge, looking to save a loss, or make a profit off what looks like a wager gone bad. Half-time wagers are worth a look, particularly if you?ve been paying close attention, not only to a specific game, but to a team?s overall pattern during the season. Some staffs are very good at making adjustments (which produces opportunity for the bettor), while others struggle in this area.

Keep an eye out for patterns and you could find some profitable situations after the first two quarters are in the books.

These adjustments might seem like an overly difficult task on the Tuesday after the NFL underdogs go 13-3 against the spread, both for the bettor and the coaches.

Have a great week and good luck with the games.
