The Buffalo Sabres' two-game winning streak likely will afford forward Erik Rasmussen's shoulder and defenseman Richard Smehlik's psyche more time to mend.
Each player likely will miss his third consecutive game when the Sabres take on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in Buffalo's last game before the All-Star break.
The two have been out of commission for very different reasons. Rasmussen, still dogged by pain in his knee, was sidelined when he added a shoulder injury to his medical chart. Rasmussen said he is feeling "better, but not great."
It's more complicated with Smehlik, who is surprisingly comfortable with being benched after a recent string of mistake-laden games.

Buffalo held an optional skate Monday afternoon, with 11 players participating.
Hurricanes' last win against an Eastern Conference opponent came on New Year's Eve against Sabres, 5-4.

A little more of Buf??s top line that has been reunited?K..

from pitt papers

Mario Lemieux won't be the only prominent player missing from the Penguins' lineup this evening. Right winger Stephane Richer (neck) and defenseman Hans Jonsson (finger) will not play, and center Robert Lang, who had oral surgery yesterday, is questionable, at best.

We're going to miss those guys," said forward Jan Hrdina, who plans to rejoin the lineup tonight after missing two games because of back spasms. "But what can you do?"

Coach Rick Kehoe said the Penguins hadn't decided who would start in net tonight because of back-to-back games at Philadelphia and at home against San Jose.
When the Penguins played back-to-back games last week, Johan Hedberg started the first game, his 10th straight, at home against Tampa Bay and Jean-Sebastien Aubin started the second game against the New York Islanders. This however is a different situation, with the all-star break following Wednesday's home game. The Penguins will have five days between games.
"We're comfortable with either goaltender," Kehoe said.

Playing in Philadelphia has been an Achilles' heel for the Penguins with an all-time record of 16-76-7 and a 1-15 mark in the past 16 games.

Pitt expecting Boucher for Philly as cechmanek sat Saturday with a sinus infection but of course no guarantee?K

Philly 16.2 % PP at home(18th in league 16 for 99)
Philly 2.25 goals against, 4th in league
8th in PK at 85.8 %, 8th in home PK as well(87.2% 68 of 78 killed)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled forward Shane Endicott from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, it was announced today by General Manager Craig Patrick.
