GAME NOTES: Trailing the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks by three games with four to play, the hopes for a Big 12 regular season title have all but disappeared for the Oklahoma Sooners, who now must focus their attention on finishing the year strong and heading into the postseason with a full head of steam. The sixth-ranked Sooners began moving in that direction over the weekend, with a 73-62 win over Kansas State. The victory was the fifth in the last six games for Kelvin Sampson's team, which goes on the road on Tuesday, to take on the Baylor Bears. Dave Bliss' charges have made positive strides this season, despite their subpar conference record. Still, a young team with a great deal of potential, Baylor would like nothing better than to end the year with a few wins. The Bears return home after a tough road trip that saw the team get routed at Texas Tech (90-65) and most recently at Kansas (87-72). Oklahoma has owned this series, winning 20 of the 25 all-time meetings, including 15 straight. Earlier this year, the Sooners recorded a 13-point win in Norman (70-57). Baylor's last win in this series came back in the 1977-78 season.
With Saturday's win over Kansas State, Oklahoma has now won 20 or more games in five straight seasons. One of the most balanced teams in the country this year, the Sooners are getting it done at both ends of the court. The team has more than enough offensive weapons to win a shootout (79.1 ppg), but also plays the kind of stingy defense that can have opponents scratching their heads (allows just 64.5 ppg). Senior forward Aaron McGhee is making a strong push for all-conference honors as the season winds down. The 6-8, 250-pounder has recorded four double-doubles in the last six games and is averaging 19.7 points and 9.1 rebounds over the last seven outings, overall. On the year, McGhee is second on the team in scoring (15.0 ppg), while pacing the Sooners on the boards (7.2 rpg). Plenty of scoring support comes from the perimeter in the form of junior guards Hollis Price, Ebi Ere and Jason Detrick. Price is the backcourt leader posting a team-best 16.5 ppg. However, he has hit a wall of late and is netting just 8.8 ppg over his last four outings. Before that, he was averaging 23.3 ppg over the four previous games. Ere, the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, nets 14.6 ppg and ranks third on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. Detrick is earning starting time now and has come on of late, chipping in 10.6 ppg.
An extremely young unit, the Bears have suffered through growing pains this season. Still, there is reason for optimism in Waco these days, as Baylor is heading in the right direction. The team has just one senior in a starting lineup that boasts two freshmen, a sophomore and a junior. One of the top freshmen in the nation this season, 6-8 Lawrence Roberts has burst on the scene in the Big 12, leading the Bears in both scoring (16.5 ppg), rebounding (8.1 rpg) and blocks (1.4 bpg). Adding to the frontcourt muscle for the Bears is senior forward Greg Davis, who isn't much of a scorer (7.7 ppg), but does give the team another aggressive body in the low post (6.1 rpg, 1.3 bpg). With that pair creating problems inside, the backcourt tandem of junior Wendell Greenleaf and freshman John Lucas, gets unabated looks at the basket. They have made opponents pay for that for the most part this year, with Greenleaf pouring in 13.5 ppg, followed closely by Lucas' 12.8. Greenleaf and Lucas have both flourished from behind the arc this season, with Greenleaf leading the team with 57 treys, followed by Lucas, who has knocked down 47 of his attempts. The duo are both adequate distributors as well, combining for almost eight assists per game (7.6).
Baylor has been solid at home and horrific on the road. With this game being played in Waco, the Bears may be able to keep things close for awhile. Still, Oklahoma is still in a fight for a two-seed in the upcoming conference tourney and has been good enough on the road this year, to escape the Ferrell Center with a win.
