Opener won't be televised

The game will be broadcast on ESPN360

Generally when you make the effort to play college football on a Thursday night, you're repaid with a national television audience. Particularly if you're a Big Ten Conference team.

Not this time. Not for Minnesota.

The Gophers open the season at Kent State on Thursday, and the only people able to watch will be those with high-speed Internet and a provider that offers ESPN360, a broadband service that will "broadcast" the game.

"Kent State has the game, they control it," Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi said Monday. "When you play on the road, the home team controls the TV."

The Mid-American Conference was working on playing this game at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and getting it televised by ESPN. Coach Glen Mason said Monday that "someone was making an assumption; I don't know who it was."

The bright side, of course, is two extra days to prepare for the Sept. 9 game at No. 9 California. But playing at night on the road on a Thursday is never ideal. Minnesota did it last season at Tulsa and won big but vowed never to play again at 9:20 p.m.

At least this game is earlier.

"Not being on TV, I can't figure that out," Mason said. "We were led to believe it would be a TV game at the Hall of Fame. It didn't work out that way... . It doesn't make much sense."
