Tye Fields is 11-0 with 11 knockouts, all in the first round. That would tell some that he's a devastating puncher.
But it would tell those who have been around boxing for a while just as much about Fields' opponents as it does about Fields himself.
And Fields, who will fight Curtis McDormon in a six-round heavyweight bout on a six-bout card beginning at 7 p.m. today at The Orleans, is honest about that as well.
"I haven't fought anybody in the top 10, not even close," Fields said. "I know that's a step I have to take."
Fields, 25, is refreshingly different from the majority of boxers, most of whom believe they're ready for a world title shot the moment they turn professional. Fields is a 6-foot-8-inch, 270-pound behemoth who has yet to hear a bell for the second round, yet you won't get so much as one hyperbolic word out of his mouth.
A former starting forward for the San Diego State basketball team, for which he averaged 11 points and 3.9 rebounds a game in 1996-97 (including eight points and four rebounds in a game against UNLV), Fields has dreams as big as his punch. He is, however, realistic.
"I want to be the best at whatever I do, so in this particular endeavor, that's becoming heavyweight champion of the world," Fields said. "But I don't know what's in the future. I haven't been around boxing enough. I know that I'm going to give it a good effort and I won't shortchange myself. Where it takes me, who knows? All I can control is myself, and I know that since that will be the case, I'll work hard and make every effort to get better."
Tall fighters traditionally have difficulty fighting on the inside, preferring to use their reach to give themselves punching room. Many of Fields' knockouts have come after exchanges in close quarters, but he said he isn't sure what that signifies.
Whether it means he's a tough inside fighter like Joe Frazier or whether it simply means he's fought inferior opposition remains to be seen. But Fields said his basketball experience has helped him in boxing.
"I think my footwork is pretty good, and that definitely comes from having played basketball," he said. "Especially when you're playing in the post and you have to make moves around the basket, footwork is very important. I think that's one thing that has kind of carried over to boxing."
Fields, a devoted weightlifter who easily benches 315 pounds with a high number of repetitions, said he is going to take boxing as far as he can go with it. But if he gets one of his wishes, it may create an unusual situation.
He weighed 280 for his last fight and plans to weigh 270 tonight. His trainers prefer him to be around 270. But Fields wants to fight at 300, which would make him the heaviest of the heavyweight champions if he were to win the title.
"As long as I got up there and was still working hard and still in shape, the weight wouldn't bother me," he said. "If I was 300, I don't think anyone could stop me."
