The new season of American Idol is upon us and according to the blogs and twitters, this panel of superstar judges (sans the returning Randy Jackson) was a lot more digestible for America.
Yes, gone are the days of a slurring Paula Abdul, snide villain Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres. Their much-anticipated replacements, Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith?s Steven Tyler delivered more sugar-coated critiques of the more ? shall we say, vocally challenged contestants ? and this new era of American Idol is officially absent of the sneering sarcasm typical of the Cowell years.
Stand-out auditions included beaming 16-year-old Robbie Rosen as well as 16-year-old Victoria Huggins who had the speaking voice of a one who had sucked from a helium tank but the singing voice of an angel. To even her out, Huggins had the personality of an intoxicated chipmunk, and so she tearfully accepted her golden ticket to Hollywood.
Although singing waitress Devyn Rush gave a beautiful rendition of ?God Bless the Child,? judges were not overly impressed with her simple t-shirt and jeans style. Although judges gave her a resounding yes to the Hollywood round, Tyler warned she needs to go ?clothes shopping.?
Melinda Ademi, the daughter of Kosovo war refugees also made it through, while the last New Jersey audition was another story of triumph over adversity. Sixteen-year-old (yes, there was an abundance of them) Travis Orlando went from the homeless shelters of the Bronx to Hollywood after his rousing performance of The Beatles? ?Eleanor Rigby? followed by Jason Mraz?s ?I?m Yours.?
Orlando?s twin brother Timmy along with another family member, rushed into the room when the judges proclaimed that Orlando had earned a golden ticket.
Orlando tearfully exclaimed that he wanted to ?prove to other people that anyone can do this.?
