During the Rattlesnake Roundup, 1,200 or so rattlesnakes are captured, many of them western diamondbacks that are coaxed out of their winter holes near Alamogordo, some 200 miles south of Albuquerque. The reptiles are killed and some end up in chili.

Powell, a veterinarian, said the roundup is not only cruel, but also causes enormous damage to the balance of nature. The more snakes that are removed, he says, the greater the population of rodents

Is it really possible to be CRUEL to a rattlesnake that will bite the hell out of you any chance it gets? If I did own a farm in Texas, I think I'd rather have a few extra mice runnin' around than a Mutha Fukkin' RATTLESNAKE!! These PETA lunatics should be required to sleep with one of these damn snakes everytime they open their mouth in defense of them. It wouldn't bother me one single bit if every friggin' snake on this earth had their heads chopped off.

I unfortunately live in an area where these damn rattlesnakes exist. I have to continuously spread some type of rattlesnake deterrent chit on my yard about once a month during the warmer season. I absolutely HATE these fukkin' things!!

U have Rattlesnakes there?? I've never seen one, and we live pretty close.

On the subject on the rattlesnake roundup, I think it's fine to eat them. I don't really care for indiscriminate killing of them unless they are in your yard endangering your family or livestock.

As far as PETA goes, I think I have expressed my views on those wackos many times here, but I'll end this post with a quote from the founder of PETA. I have many more documented if anybody is interested in them.

"Six million people died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughter houses." Ingrid Newkirk, PeTA (Washington Post, Nov. 13, 1983)

I know what you mean.A couple of weeks ago I encountered a rattlesnake for the first time.I was hanging out in the backyard with my dog, when all of a sudden we heard a rattle coming from a bush.My dog started barking & started heading to that bush.It took me a few seconds to realize what it was.I just shouted to my dog to stop & she just froze right before getting to the bush.I ran & scooped her up & ran into the house.I then went out to the bush, but the snake wasn't there. She got scared of the dog barking & hid behind a cactus.
Out here there are people who come to the house & grab the snake with what looks like big pliers & puts into a bucket. This rescuer told me the same thing you said.He doesn't believe in killing them.So he took the snake into the desert & released it.

Being a city boy I didn't understand what he was talking about, hindering the balance of nature.
I wonder if they feel the same thing about killing roaches ?

you always hear this talk about the "delicate balance" of nature......pretty much every "delicate" mechanism described in nature has about a million negative feedback mechanisms and when one or two is eliminated, nothing changes.....

classic example with Rattlesnakes : you eliminate the Rattlers, mice thrive, Bullsnakes thrive and replace Rattlers......

personally, I'd lot rather see a red tailed hawk flying around
getting fat off rodents than a fricken reptile....IMHO....:)

What the hecks the differance. There is so much road kill of many animals acrosse this country everday. It makes that RS hunt looks like zero. Im sure we will screw the earth up so many other ways before were done with it. RS hunt won't count for much.

Yep, afraid so 65. Matter of fact, they have lots and lots of rattlers just up the road in Mammoth Cave National Park. Little over a year ago while some guy was clearing off our lot, he spotted two deep in my backyard. He managed to kill one, but I guarantee you that other one is waiting for my ass when I crank up the lawnmower this summer. I doubt few exist in Warren Co., but I bet ya there are probably a few slithering around down your way.

I express your same sentiments regarding the PETA maniacs. Comparing the killing of humans and chickens is bout par for the course with that crazy crew. I'm an animal lover and would never dream of abusing an animal such as a dog, cat, horse, rabbit, deer, etc...etc..., but when reptiles are involved(snakes), I'd rather take corrective action before they take bit out of my ass! PETA folks would argue that a rattlesnake is no different than a Golden Retreiver, in the fact that they are both God's creatures and no harm should be done to either. WELL, if the dumbasses can't distinguish between the two, then they should at least treat them the same and have them some rattlers runnin' around the house. I feel like I'm probably in the majority here, but it is quite frightening how many people are involved with the PETA organization. I'd actually like to invite a few of them up when deer season starts...

found a mushroom viper in my underpants a few minutes ago....whew was I scared....I grabbed it right behind the head and started shaking it...the harder I shook the harder it tried to get away. I think it started to get mad because it started to spit....really wierd......so when I started to try to stop it from spitting I felt this wierd feeling.......kinda like climbing the rope in gym class,, and suddenly I made friends with the spitting zipper snake that was in my hands:D ....I know it sounds weird but if you don't believe me then I will be happy to show the little bugger to ya:D
