"When you get a course that's firm and fast and it gets windy, that's when the great shot-making comes out," (USGA setup guru Mike) Davis said. "When you think who are the best shot-makers, they're the greatest players. I think that's why Pebble always adds this great drama. When Tiger did what he did in 2000, he clearly was the best player, and he just lapped the field, and he did it because of his incredible shot-making skills and his ability to think his way around the golf course."

An added strategic element this time around will be the new groove rule.

"These greens are absolutely the smallest in major championship golf," Davis said. "With these sized greens, distance control is so important, the ability to spin the ball is important," Davis said. "So if you're coming out of the rough, you're at a definite disadvantage. We really think that the new groove, particularly at Pebble Beach, where we know we're going to have dry conditions, is going to matter a lot."

And then there are the greens. First rule: everything breaks toward the ocean. Second rule: don't leave yourself above the hole.

"Relative to other U.S. Opens, these greens will probably be the slowest we've had in the last decade or so," Davis said. "However, I would say that they are maybe the scariest greens we've had. You get out there and see so many of these greens have a lot of pitch from back-to-front or side-to-side, and they're small, and you get windy conditions. That speed is a very scary speed if you short-side yourself or get on the wrong side of the hole."

Adding . . .

Phil Mickelson(7/1) e.w.
Lee Westwood(12/1) e.w.
Heath Slocum(125/1) e.w.
Tom Watson(150/1 or ???/1) (1/4 for 1-2-3-4) e.w. Top American

Mickelson(-130) (got it at -110) over Woods (Tournament)

Nicklaus - 1972
Watson - 1982
Woods - 2000

In 3 of 4 Opens at Pebble Beach, the winner was the best player in the world having arguably the best seaon of their career.

From my first golf post of the season on January 7 . . .

Since before the President?s Cup had concluded, my #1 prediction, without any hesitation, for the 2010 season, has been that Phil Mickelson will win as many majors as any other individual. I?m still standing by that one.

Sorry bud. Taking a little break. I have a few buddies (insiders) who are out at Pebble. As of now they have no injury or updates. I will search the net to see if i can find anything with substance. As far as researching and posting matchups I should be back by the Open.

Golf was taking up too much of life. I used the money i won to buy a new putter/irons/ plane ticket and a wii :0008 I'll be back. Anyway, Stan has been great this year, his plays are for 1 round, so you don't have to dea with the 4 rounds of stress like mine

I never bet the odds-on top favorites, but I really feel one of the top ten lowest odds guys will win.
Having said that, I am still making my plays win place, show, but basically hoping for seconds and thirds and just considering a win a lucky pick.

Mahan 40-1 win, 20-1 place, 10-1 show

Choi 50-1 win, 25-1 place, 12 1/2 show

Kuchar 60-1 win, 30-1 place, 15-1 show

Slocum 80-1 win, 40-1 place, 20-1 show

Gay 125 win, 62 1/2 place, 31-1 show

Toms 125 win, 62 1/2 place, 31-1 show

I also have alive the following plays that were made before the Masters for 10 units each

"TO WIN ONE OF THE 4 MAJORS THIS YEAR"

Villegas 8-1

Kim 10-1

Poulter 10-1

D Johnson 12 1/2 to 1

C Campbell 25-1

Two of these chumps aren't even in the Tournament this week! Ouch!

As always....good luck to all of you!
Should be an exciting 4 days!

Heres my gift to yall

Australia's top-ranked golfer has a badly swollen left wrist and was able to play only seven holes of a practice round at Pebble Beach on Tuesday (Wed. Melb. time) before the pain caused him to quit.

If Allenby withdraws, he will be replaced in the field by good friend and fellow Victorian Jarrod Lyle who is first alternate.

Allenby says he first noticed the wrist pain when he awoke Monday morning at home in Florida, before flying across the country.

"I don't know what I've done, but my left wrist feels like it's broken,'' said world No.13 Allenby.

"It's badly inflamed, a bad case of tendinitis. The pain's unbelievable. I can hardly move it. I wonder if there's a voodoo doll out there

Tempting, but sounds like that smoke Padraig was blowing a few years back at the British and I took that bait as well :mj03: :mj03:

Weir?s golf game? ?Not good?
Heading into U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, at least he has his putter going
By IAN HUTCHINSON, QMI AGENCY
Last Updated: June 14, 2010 11:24pm

Not one given to excessive verbiage, Mike Weir left little doubt about his feelings on the state of his game with the meat of the season coming up, including this week?s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the British Open not too far behind it at St. Andrews.

?Not good,? said Weir, backing up numbers that show he has missed three cuts in his past four events, including his most recent at the Memorial and has just one top 10 in 13 tries thus far.

Sitting in 95th spot on last week?s PGA Tour money list, Weir is far from a favourite this week, but there?s always that green jacket from 2003 that suggests anything is possible.

The other glimmer of hope is a couple of personal stats that will serve him well in a U.S. Open, even if they are among less-impressive numbers in other categories.

?To do well and contend, you have to putt well, so it feels good to be putting well. I just need to find a few more fairways,? Weir said.

Weir?s 27.54 putts per round were No. 1 among tour players last week, while his 1.732 putting average was 11th, all stats that warm the heart when a player is facing the notorious slick greens of a U.S. Open
