UFC combatants hope inside knowledge helps

Josh Koscheck trained with Anthony Johnson for about a week two years ago.

It wasn't that long, but Koscheck feels he saw all he needed then to devise a game plan to beat one of the rising welterweight stars in their UFC 106 bout tonight at Mandalay Bay.

"I sparred with him. I grappled with him. I know a lot about him. My roommate, Josh Thomson, trained him," Koscheck said. "I'm not really concerned too much about this fight."

The 31-year-old veteran of Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter" stopped short of disclosing what strategic edge he thinks he picked up during those sessions.

"We'll keep that personal right now," he said. "It's been awhile, but he hasn't changed as a fighter. He's still the same fighter, I can guarantee that."

Johnson preferred to take more of a high road while discussing his brief stint training at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif.

"To actually be there in the gym with the caliber of guys they have was an honor. They have a great team. Training with Josh was tremendous," he said. "It was two years ago, but I still remember it. He's improved. I've improved. What more can you ask for (than) two guys that want to be the best?"

Koscheck says the bout has the potential to be the one of the best fights of the year.

"This is a good fight because there's a lot of knockout power coming from both sides, so it should be exciting for the fans," he said.

Johnson said he would be somewhat surprised if Koscheck, a wrestler with an improving standup game, tried to stand with him.

"Yeah, I would be surprised. But Josh has been getting some good knockouts lately. When you get knockouts like he's been getting, you want to stay that way because the fans love it and that's how you get paid," he said. "You get paid by knocking people out. You don't get paid by laying on top of each other. That don't get the bills paid."

Koscheck used to be known as more of a "lay-and-pray" fighter, outpositioning his opponents with his superior wrestling skills and hoping to win a decision.

As Johnson alluded to, that has changed.

Koscheck's last three fights have ended with first-round knockouts, two in victory. He said with the rash of questionable decisions in recent UFC fights, he plans to avoid going to decisions in the future.

"(Fans) have got to know that this fight isn't going to the judge's scorecards like the last couple of fights have been," he said. "This fight isn't going to the cards, I can guarantee you that."

Still, Koscheck said he won't simply stand in the middle of the cage and exchange punches with Johnson, who has four first-round knockouts in seven UFC appearances.

"There's always a disadvantage of standing in front of somebody and trading punches. This is mixed martial arts. We're wearing four-ounce gloves," he said. "With boxing gloves on, yeah, I could stand in front of him all day long and take punches. With MMA, you can only afford to take one or two and that's about it. For me, I have to use my head movement and be a smart fighter."

While both welterweights are trying to work their way up to title contention, the main event features two light heavyweight champions hoping to recapture the belt down the road. Tito Ortiz returns from back surgery and free agency that kept him out of action for 18 months to face Forrest Griffin, who is coming off back-to-back losses.

"When I step in the cage, people are going to realize that Tito Ortiz is back," he said. "I don't think there's anything for me to prove besides winning another light heavyweight title, and that's my goal right now."

The card also features the UFC debut of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, a light heavyweight who will take on Luiz Cane. Nogueira is the twin brother of former interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Two welterweight bouts also are on the main card. Amir Sadollah will take on Phil Baroni in a battle of Las Vegas-based fighters, and Paulo Thiago meets Jacob Volkmann. At least two undercard bouts, a welterweight fight between Ben Saunders and Marcus Davis and a middleweight matchup of Kendall Grove and Jake Rosholt, will be shown live on Spike (Cable 29) at 6 p.m.

The 10-fight card begins at 4:30 p.m., with the pay-per-view broadcast airing live at 7.

UFC president says he believes TUF coaches will still meet

Tito Ortiz has made up with UFC president Dana White and fixed the back problems he?s suffered from since 2003.

Now it?s time to get back to business.

A fired up and serious Ortiz hopped on the scale at his first official UFC weigh-in in over 18 months. He came in at 204 pounds for his main event bout, a rematch with Forrest Griffin at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Saturday.

Fans received Ortiz with an even mix of cheers and boos. Ortiz seemed happy to receive both.

?Tomorrow night is all about the fans,? Ortiz said. ?I?m glad Forrest took this fight but he?s going to come out on the short end. He asked for two more rounds the last time we fought and now he?s going to get them. I?m very excited, there?s nothing like this.?

Griffin weighed-in a pound heavier at 205 and looked happy to be on-stage as well, ready to put a disappointing loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101 behind him.

When the two fighters met the first time in 2006, Griffin was basically just beginning his UFC career while Ortiz was one of the sport?s bigger stars.

At Friday?s weigh-in, Griffin eluded to the idea that Ortiz?s time as an elite light heavyweight may be over.

?It?s obviously great to be here,? Griffin said. ?I?m looking forward to fighting the ?former man.??

Welterweight Anthony Johnson gave a smile when he came in at perfect 170 pounds following his last fight where he failed to make weight.

His opponent, Josh Koscheck, weighed in at 171.

In other big news, White announced during a Q&A session with fans that he believes Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson will be back in the UFC following his filming of the new ?A-Team? movie and says that the much anticipated fight between he and Rashad Evans is still likely.

?Rashad has a fight with Thiago Silva in January,? White said. ?If Rashad is able to get out that with a win he?ll fight Rampage next.?

#1- Koscheck is a fucking moron if he thinks anything he saw 2 years ago will help him today. I'm sure Koscheck would say that he's not the same fighter he was 2 years ago as well.

#2- Koscheck is saying all the things a concerned fighter says. He's concerned because it's one of the biggest fights of his career to date. His future in the WW division is on the line and where he stands in it.

#3- Rumble is gonna KO his ass.

UFC 106: Fans' faith turns Griffin into fave vs. Ortiz

UFC 106: Fans' faith turns Griffin into fave vs. Ortiz

UFC 106: Fans' faith turns Griffin into fave vs. Ortiz

Rule No. 1 for sports bettors: Keep your emotions out of it.

That's been tough for mixed martial arts fans, who have hit the window hard for this weekend's bout between the polarizing Tito Ortiz and MMA fan favorite Forrest Griffin at UFC 106.

Oddsmakers opened with Ortiz as a -125 favorite for Saturday night's rematch between these two light heavyweight contenders, but have watched the pendulum swing towards Griffin, who has been bet up to a -135 price tag.

That number climbed as high as Griffin -170 and the wagers didn't start coming in on Ortiz until the savvy veteran hit plus money, where he currently stands at +105. According to renowned MMA linesmaker Joey Oddessa, that one-sided action is a lot of fans betting with their hearts and not with their heads.

?I'm still surprised at the heavy line movement and lack of faith in Tito Ortiz,? Oddessa says of the betting public. ?They bet to see Ortiz lose like they do Floyd Mayweather.?

Being the bad guy is a role Ortiz has relished during his legendary MMA career. He's always been outspoken and taken on the persona of the ?Huntington Beach Bad Boy? against such fan favorites as Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell and Griffin, back in 2006.

Ortiz won that first matchup with Griffin by way of split decision. Since then, the 34 year old has fought just five times in the past three and a half years and hasn't been inside the octagon since losing a decision to current light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 in May 2008. That layoff could also be persuading bettors to fade Ortiz in his return Saturday.

However, standing across the cage from Ortiz could be one of two fighters. Griffin is perhaps the gutsiest athletes in MMA but has shown he isn't the most mentally stable fighter. In his most recent bout, he let frustration get the best of him and was dismantled by Anderson Silva. Before that, Griffin lost by way of TKO to Rashad Evans, dropping his UFC light heavyweight title in the process.

?History shows us fighters are not the same after being KO'd, mentally and physically,? says Oddessa. ?I don't think he is the same fighter he was when he upset Quinton Jackson. Forrest can't be riding high on confidence and he is stepping in with a fighter that doesn't necessarily have heavy hands, but owns a victory over him already. Not an ideal spot for Griffin.?

In their first meeting, Ortiz set the pace in the opening round but looked gassed in the final two allowing Griffin to press. Many fans saw the decision the other way, however, the judges' card had Ortiz the winner as a -400 Las Vegas favorite.

He underwent back surgery last fall and blamed his recent winless skid (two losses and one draw) on the nagging injury. Ortiz was originally scheduled to face fellow veteran Mark Coleman at UFC 106, but a knee injury to Coleman opened the door for this rematch and gave Griffin just six weeks to prepare.

?Griffin had a nice run, but I think he is at a crossroads in his career after his recent losses,? says Oddessa. ?He is a huge success story, but I think he caught some guys overlooking him when he was peaking. I'm not convinced that Griffin's heart and head are into this bout against Ortiz.

?This bout might be most significant bout for Ortiz at this time of his career. The seasoned veteran that he is, I believe he will surprise the bettors backing Forrest and work his way into another title shot.?

Fight fans can watch UFC 106 live on pay per view from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Picks

Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin: Ortiz (+105) ? With Forrest fighting scared, Ortiz can impose his will for a decision win.

Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony Johnson: Johnson (even) - Johnson is back in the ring and swinging less than a month after his third straight KO win.

Amir Sadollah vs. Phil Baroni: Sadollah (-185): UFC is feeding a past-his-prime vet to their young TUF star.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Luiz Cane: Nogueira (-200) The other Nogueira brother wins his UFC debut.
