Well fellas, anyone watching the Red Sox/Houston game?
Laz Diez has no business being an umpire at any level.
Just pathetic and embarrassing. Why MLB has this guy umpiring is beyond me.
According to Yankees catcher Russell Martin, during last night?s game against the Angels, home plate umpire Laz Diaz was, well? a real dick to him.
Martin said Diaz would not allow him to throw the ball back to the pitcher after foul balls. Which, if true, reaches unimaginable levels of arrogance and passive-aggression, even in the unimaginably arrogant and passive aggressive world of major league umpiring.
Here is what Martin said about the bizarre incident:
?He said that it was a privilege that I had to earn, for me to throw the ball back,? said the catcher, a seven-year veteran and three-time All Star. ?That?s never happened to me before. I even told him, because there?s guys on base, I like to keep my arm loose. Nope. ?I?m not letting you throw the ball back.? That?s pretty strange, to me. That?s a good story, huh??
It?s tough to say what definitively happened without hearing Diaz?s side of the story. And since umpires never talk about what happens in games even after the fact, we may never know. But, again, if Martin?s accusations are true? wow, Laz Diaz.
Martin said the ball-throwing ban came after the two had an early-inning argument over balls and strikes. He also offered this crystal clear opinion of Diaz?s behavior:
?I think it happened in the second inning or something,? Martin said at his locker after the game. ?And then even at the end of the game, after I got hit in the neck, I?m like, ?can I throw the ball back now?? He?s like still, no. I?m like, ?you?re such a dick. You?re a dick, dude. Like, for real. Unbelievable.? ?
