always interesting when these umps get worked up...
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Major League Baseball umpires filed a demand to the American Arbitration Association on Thursday to resolve a dispute with baseball owners about a computer system that analyzes balls and strikes.

Umpires are angry that they are not being provided with information about the Questec Umpire Information System. They filed a grievance against owners on July 19, claiming the refusal for information violated their labor contract.

Lawyers from baseball management sent a letter saying that the issue would be decided after the season by the joint committee of umpire and management representatives.

Umpires feel that the computer system can not correctly track pitches, especially breaking balls.

Meanwhile, three more of the 22 umpires who lost their jobs during a failed mass resignation in 1999 were rehired, the commissioner's office said Thursday.

The three umpires, Bruce Dreckman, Sam Holbrook and Paul Nauert, began working minor league games on Tuesday after completing a training program. Baseball has rehired eight of the 22 umpires, while four others were allowed to retire with back pay.
