Certainly odd to see a line like this isn't it? UNC +7.5 against FSU and it isn't football. wow. Well here are my thoughts. UNC cannot compete whatsoever with teams that press and play any kind of frantic defense thrown at them. I've watched every single UNC game this year....televised or not....and even the slow down teams beat up on the 'Heels when they trapped or pressed. Carolina's guards (Morrison, Boone, etc) cannot handle these situations. They just aren't good enough ball handlers.

As for FSU, I am the first to admit I don't know exactly what style of ball they play. I know they have Big Jelly Dixon down low...which leads me to think that they may not play a press. However I think they possess speed in other areas.

My prediction is that UNC will keep this one close...probably not win....but 7.5 may be too much. But beware of fouls at the end

Hope this helps anyone and I'd be glad to answer more Tarheel questions if there are any. ;)

Good luck today all!

I have a question

I have a question

What the hell happened to UNC, and when will they be able to turn it around?

capel out

capel out

jason capel suffered a concussion in practice last night diving after a loose ball and did not make the trip to tallahassee. to say this loss is huge for the heels is an understatement.

Loophole....

Good call on Capel's absense. I just read about it now and was coming to post it. Thanks for beating me to it ;)

Now that certainly does put an interesting spin on things. I would almost recommend this as a no play game for everyone. Jawad Williams may finally have his day to shine with extra minutes. And don't discount this...as crazy as this sounds...but if Orlando Melendez gets more playing time, that'll be good for the 'Heels. He's a great reserve that gets absolutely 0 playing time. He's the best athlete that UNC has and to say he's underused would be a major understatement.

UNC is really suffering from the coaching changes in the past few years. When Dean Smith retired, Coach Guthridge inherited a ridiculous team (Vince Carter, Antwan Jamison etc etc) and rode them to the final 4. The problems the heels are suffering now lies in the crappy recruiting classes that followed the next couple of years with Guthridge. Some of his recruits are John Holmes, Orlando Melendez, Evtimov...WHO are these guys you are asking?? Exactly! Probably the only good good recruit Guthridge had was Joe Forte. Once the heels lost Jason Parker because of some academic "situation", their next few years were sealed. Especially when Forte and Haywood left, the Tar Heels were left with some pretty big holes. Also Curry not coming back and Peppers going pro in the NFL hurt some.

Too many freshman this year, no inside presence (Lang not only sucks IMO but can't stay healthy), inconsistent shooting and spotty defense at best have led to this years demise. Doherty will be a good coach, emphasis on will. He's young too, and the guys he has to choose from were not his recruits.

So how long will the Tar Heels be this bad? Not long, it will be turned around next year. Being in Chapel Hill, I know that this place lives and dies by it's basketball team. They have a great recruiting class coming in. ESPN has UNC's class ranked 2, behind the Dookies of course. Specifically:

Raymond Felton G 6-1 180 Latta, S.C./Latta H.S.
Sean May F 6-9 240 Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North H.S.
Rashad McCants G/F 6-4 210 Asheville, N.C./New Hampton Prep, N.H.

And they just signed a big man w/ Damian Grant.

So yes the Tar Heels will get better, but they will be young next year so that could be a big factor. This years problems aren't problems that surfaced this year...rather from poor recruiting in the past. Maybe I'm just optimistic, but writing all of this makes me feel a little better about next year
 .

As far as tonight, I never bet on my Heels but with Capel and his double double average for points/rebounds missing tonight, who knows. I wouldn't touch it. Although Florida State has beaten Duke at home, it's Florida State! I never thought I'd see the day that the line for UNC at FSU reads: +7.5.

Best of luck to all!

ppabart-

you should be happy to know that while watching the game, I thought of you and what you said about Orlando in your post. Tell me something? When he came in, he completely changed the momentum of the game...so why the hell did Doherty take him out right away? He always seems to do that, take out hot players. It happened against against Virginia...Jawad was red hot in the first half so he got demoted to the pine. It makes no sense!
