What to look for when betting the PGA Championship at BetOnline.com
Only three players have ever won the British Open and PGA Championship in the same season? Walter Hagen (1924), Nick Price (1994) and Tiger Woods (2000). Woods will be looking to be the first to do it twice this week. Though it seems he is getting that early form back still to do this twice would be a major accomplishment. You have to play well in the final round to win, but here's an interesting statistical oddity. Of the top-10 players in Final Round Scoring Average this season, only two have won, Tiger Woods and Ben Crane.
The current top 125 features the young and the not quite so young. Kevin Na, who is still 21 years old and Jay Haas who is 51 years old, both hold spots in the Top 125. Not just anyone makes this Tournament. So the question is; does age have an advantage? Not really, here?s why; through The International, players in their 20s have won nine times this year.
Players in their 30s have collected 16 wins while players 40 and older have won eight times. OK so the youth has a slight edge. Doesn?t it always? Besides age let?s look at what really matters. Like they say at the track, ?horses for courses? also applies to this PGA Championship as well.
The big hitters may very well have an edge. Look for those guys to be riding the crest of the leader board. At 7,376 yards, the Lower Course at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., isn?t the longest course in major championship history or even in the PGA Championship, that distinction belonging to last year?s venue in Kohler, Wis., Whistling Straits, which measured 7,514 yards, 95% of which was sand, darn near anyway. Not true, of course. But while its many bunkers and high fescue neo-links look defined the character of Whistling Straits, Baltusrol is a green goblin. At par-70, it features 25-30-yard wide fairways lined by rough consisting of Kentucky Blue Grass and Perennial Rye, a rather sticky agronomical combination that tends to slow down not only the modern golf ball but also the modern golf swing.

In many ways this 87th PGA Championship will look a lot like the seven U.S. Open championships that have been staged at Baltusrol. An extensive renovation of the A.W. Tillinghast creation has added 240 yards since the ?93 Open won by Lee Janzen, and it should make the first PGA at Baltusrol?s Lower Course and the second in New Jersey nothing short of a pure ball-striking examination, which ought to please the likes of defending champion Vijay Singh.
The often overlooked and relatively insignificant statistic, total driving, might turn out to be the key by week?s end. Singh and No. 1 Tiger Woods, the only two players who have finished in the top 10 in the year?s first three majors, head a 156-player field that includes 97 of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The two men also are among 14 past champions teeing it up at Baltusrol, which has hosted 15 national championships and was the site of the first nationally televised golf tournament, the 1954 U.S. Open.
Colin Montgomerie, second to Tiger Woods at the British Open retired from the Johnnie Walker Championship after 12 holes because of a hand injury, and he is questionable for the PGA. Montgomerie is one of nine men who qualified for the PGA who have been runner-up, losing to Steve Elkington in a playoff 10 years ago at Riviera Country Club.
Singh, whose putting had gone sour after winning the Wachovia Championship in May, led the field in putting in winning the Buick Open. Part of the credit goes to a new mallet-style putter he put in play. The win was Singh?s 17th since the beginning of 2003.

Woods is second in that span with 10 wins. There isn?t much doubt as to who are the #1 & #2 players on tour. Vijay?s consistency is amazing. Though Singh and Woods are the only two players with top-10s in all three majors, Singh is collectively 17 strokes behind Woods in those three events.
Woods, of course, won the British Open and Masters and was second in the U.S. Open. Should Woods win this week, he would become the first player of the modern era to win three majors in a season twice. As good as Woods and Singh are there are some very warm to hot players that just might break through this weekend.
Starting with the guy who just won?t go away. That being Chris DiMarco. This guy has raw talent. It?s just a matter of time before he busts through. His odds; 40 to 1. Some other nice long shot plays include; Mike Weir at 60-1, John Daly with that long drive and accurate putts at a mere 80-1. Another current hot player at big odds is KJ Choi. He is in at 80-1 also. Then there is Charles Howell III at 60-1. Stewart Cink also at 60-1. Then we get into what would be considered mild long shots in Jim Furyk at 25-1. Of course no one can simply pass on Sergio Garcia at 22-1. Then of course we have Lefty at 14-1. Along with Retief Goosen also at 14-1. If you want to shoot for a total unknown or at least unlikely name to win it from the ?field?, you can get a rather unlikely winner at 8-1. Be informed not a good play.
Winding down to Singh at +650 and finally Tiger at +235. Woods has already won two majors this year and was second in the other. Still a little over 2 to one is really biting off some heavy chalk to collect on the ?Man?. Again things to look for are guys who favor some long drives, ability to play well on Sunday as anyone in the top 10 could win it in the last round. As in any race from horses to NASCAR, it?s all about getting positioned for that stretch drive. If betting golf is a regular affair in your wagering diet then don?t be too intimidated by the top 5 names. DiMarco, Howell, Weir, Cink, Furyk, Choi and even Thomas Bjorn have a legitimate shot that those favorites who will have to contend with them and the tough course in New Jersey.
