A friend of mine caddied for Ian Holt in yesterday's final qualifying rounds for the US Open. They have sites around the country where guys are playing 36 holes to earn exemptions into the US Open. Each site is allotted a certain number of exemptions based on field size (and possibly field strength). The Columbus OH site had 120 players vying for 16 spots (some sites only have 2 spots at stake).
Very cool experience. There's no cost to walk the course with the players. There's no ropes so you can walk with the players in the fairways and up to the green. Play was suspended due to darkness, but the group I was watching finished. Ian is currently tied for 16th which means he'll be in a playoff if that holds but it doesn't seem likely. He played the last 3 holes in 3 under to get to that point so he made a late push but is probably coming up short.
One of the guys out watching was former governor John Kasich. He was just camped out on one of the par 5s.
If you live near a site, check it out some time. Cheap entertainment.
