Texas avg 50.9 and allows 14.6

Total= 65.5

USC avg 50.0 and allows 21.3

Total = 71.3

I think the line is right where it needs to be

i think it's too high. both defenses kept opposing teams below their season avg. texas wont score 50, neither will usc.

texas will give up more than 14 for sure...usc will likely give up more than 21. but it's easy to see these teams scoring in the upper 20s to mid 30s area. kinda like NDame/USC....

So. Cal
very good point SDF. I tend to agree but I kinda like the USC line at 7 and putting as much on the over. I have rooted against SC all year and the only way I see someone beating SC is by outscoring them. Texas has the offense to do it. If Texas beats SC and this game doesnt go over I would be very surprised. Along with the rest of the nation!

Deep in the heart of Texas
Thats alot of points, even for 2 scoring machines. Look for the tone of the game to be set in the first quarter. If both teams are loose, and score early, the total could be in the nineties. My gut tells me it will be more of a defensive battle than many believe. IMO the total will be high 50's

2 things to consider if you are looking at the total.

#1)

USC will be putting out a completely different defense you have seen this year. A different defense that you saw give up 42pts to Fresno St. and different defense you saw dominate UCLA's explosive offense.

Another note. You saw how Carroll was able to gameplan against UCLA with 2 weeks to prepare. He has 4 weeks to prepare for Texas.

Doesn't mean USC D will shut down Texas O or give up ton of pts. Just something to consider or worry about. More like an UNKNOWN factor.

#2)

USC special teams for year have been the worst in the nation. UGLY! UGLY UGLY! :flush:

USC got a DB back (Walker) and will have 3 LB's back at 100% healthy (Lua, Rivers, Williams). Special teams is all about DB's and LB's. These are the 2 positions USC been hit hard with season ending injuries and injuries that caused players to miss multiple games.

So you should see improvement from USC special teams. Means less pts given up and more importantly not giving up great field position for opponent.

ALL IN ALL, I think the total for this game is a GUESS. Very tough to make an argument either way. Too many unknown factors for both teams.

heres a thought ... has #1 vs #2 ever gone over 71? I have no idea, like to see those totals.... obviously, these 2 have to be close to highest scoring teams at #1 and 2 also ... I think USC wins 38-24 ... but more I think of it, their weapons are too varied for TX to handle, but anything can happen--I am never shocked by any outcome ... Silverswords and 69 Jets taught me that much

i would have thought a good coach would play his best defense during the year if he had one. i can imagine at the end of the fresno game he was saying to himself " do i unveil my best defense now or do i wait for the bowl game ?"

Prior to the season starting, USC lost their 3 best DT's, 2 best LB's, best DB and starting Safety. 5/7 were because of NFL or graduation. 2 were expected to be back and playing. USC had to replace 5 of their best 7 tacklers PLUS overcome losing their #1 returning DT to grades and #1 DB to ectasy pills in dorm charge. (i wonder if he would have been kicked out at other colleges) TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH pieces to replace to start the season AND on top of that USC suffered huge amount of key injuries during the year.

Early in the season USC lost their #2 DB to season ending injury, lost their only returning starter at LB to season ending injury, and lost their #1 nickelback to season ending injury.

Middle of the season USC lost starting DB Walker to 4 week injury and was replaced by DB PINKARD who was a former safey playing DB for first time EVER! But this turned out to be a blessing because Pinkard is a stud. Just learning on job. Superb move by Carroll.

At the end of the year (prior to Fresno St./ YOU NOTED THIS GAME) USC was without their starting LB Rivers and #1 backup LB Williams. Starting MLB Lua been playing injured to end the season. At LB USC for most of the time, have been playing 2 true freshman and a former walkon with NO DEPTH behind them.

In the Rose Bowl Jan. 4th, USC will get back a ton of players healthy and all be playing together for the first time with tons of depth. This is a fact I think people can't ignore. On film, Texas has no film of USC defense they will see on Jan. 4th because they never played together. All year USC battled INEXPERIENCE AND INJURIES on defense at the same time.

That is why an intelligent voter would vote PETE CARROLL (not paterno) coach of the year. Amazing job! But people don't know this stuff. That is why people will be shocked at the defense USC puts on the field on Jan. 4th. I also told everyone after USC gave up 42pts to FSU that Carroll was not all worried about his defense. 2 weeks later, USC D dominates a high powered UCLA offense. A lot of what I tell people at this site if from Pete Carroll himself or others who know USC coaching staff. Carroll is VERY candid in his MMQB meetings. Not afraid to answer ANYTHING asked.

Carroll appears to always unveil his best defense in the bowl games, but that is not entirely true. BCS bowl opponents don't have as complicated offenses as the Pac 10 teams do. It is easier for Carroll to gameplan/attack. Said so himself. Then on top of that, he gets 4 weeks to prepare and Carroll always has his teams playing their best football at the end of the year. He has never lost in month of November. On Jan. 4th USC will be playing an offense HIGH SCHOOL teams run but Young is extremely athletic at QB position which poses a threat.

Forgot to mention, USC has had 18 different starters on defense this year. Should have just typed that as it explains everything in one sentence. :mj07:

You prob. can count the # of teams on your hand who have suffered as many key players lost on defense as USC this season. How many of those teams are playing in a BCS bowl? Or just a bowl game?

The FACT remains, we will see a different USC defense on Jan. 4th from the regular season. Whether that is a good thing or bad for USC, we will have to wait and find out. IMO, that is a great reason NOT to play the total in this game. TOO many unknowns for both teams.

I believe that I'll tail you on this H-Hog (LOL). I might even throw in a parlay with the over. I think the Texas D will hold the Trojans to 24 points. Hook 'Em!

I get a chuckle out of the USC backers and their cockyness and lack of regard for Texas. :mj07:

Some of the Trojan fans think that this game is going to be like the OU game was last year. Better rethink that guys. All of this talk about Carroll and him having 4 weeks to prepare blah, blah, blah. SC has one shared and one outright national title under PC, which very impresseive.

However, Mack Brown and Greg Davis have completely done an about face with the Longhorn offense over the last year and a half and have really loosened up compared to their previous mindset and the Texas "O" has thrived, and will definitely score quite a few points on the Trojan D.

Give Gene Chizik 4 weeks to scheme and gameplan the Texas D against "the best offense in the history of the NCAA" and watch what will happen. SC won't come close to their 50 point average against Texas. Mark this down. VY is chapped to the core over the lopsided Heisman voting and will be a man on a mission in the Rose Bowl and will be looking to prove a point. When he has that mindset I pity the other team. Texas will beat USC straight up on Jan. 4 and claim their 4th national title!

Hook'em!

Nothing against Texas are any of their fans, but are you kidding. Chizik has gone up against USC twice and lost twice. I hardly think that Texas has superior defensive talent than Auburn had for Chizik. I believe he will scheme up something, but it won't hold SC under 30 plus points. You had better hope for a shootout, or it will be SC by 2 Td's plus.
