Ags anxious to get out on road
It?s time for the Aggie men?s basketball team to brush the dust off the travel bags.
For the first time since Dec. 8, Utah State will be playing a game outside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Aggies left Wednesday morning for Ruston, La. After two bus rides and two flights, the team arrived at their destination.
Tonight, USU takes on Louisiana Tech in a Western Athletic Conference game at Thomas Assembly Center. Tip-off is set for 6:05 MT.
This will be just the second home league game for the Bulldogs (3-13, 0-4 WAC). USU head coach Stew Morrill was quick to point out that fact.

?We?re going to have to play well,? Morrill said. ?... Their conference record is very deceiving and they haven?t had many opportunities at home. I watch them on tape and it?s the same old problem. They are so athletic.?
The Aggies (14-5, 4-0) hit the road as the hottest team in the league. They have won nine straight, but eight of those game were at home. A long home stretch got longer when a road contest at Nevada was postponed because of weather earlier this month.
Morrill said he can?t remember having a home stretch like his team just went through during his 22 years as a head coach. But it is time to start playing some road games. The Aggies will certainly get to do that, playing six of their next eight away from the Spectrum.
?I actually think the kids are looking forward to the challenge. I hope they are,? Morrill said. ?I know I am and it starts at Louisiana Tech.
?Last year we didn?t show (up) down there and I mentioned that to our team that we failed to show at Louisiana Tech last year. We were awful.?
The Bulldogs lit it up from 3-point land and about everywhere else against the Aggies. LTU shot 66.7 percent from the field, building a 27-point lead in the second half. USU did rally, but came up short in a 84-71 loss.
Both teams have changed a lot since a year ago. The Bulldogs have a new coach in Kerry Rupp and a bunch of new players. Only three USU players have been to Ruston before.
?We?ve made tremendous strides in a lot of areas,? Rupp said. ?We had a tough time at the beginning of the season getting everybody to understand what we had to do both offensively and defensively. ... We still have room for improvement, but we have come a long way.?
So have the Aggies. Four of their losses this season have been of the blowout variety and each outside of the Spectrum. But the last time USU played on the road, it did the thumping. The nine-game winning streak began with a 88-66 win at Cal State Bakersfield.
?I think our basketball team is quite a bit better than the last time we were on the road, but that doesn?t necessarily translate into W?s,? Morrill said. ?We?ve had some real close games at home and managed to win them all, but now we?ve got to take our act on the road as see what we can get done.?
Aggie guard Jaycee Carroll agreed, but is cautious about getting too excited.
?I think we made some huge steps here at home,? said Carroll, who leads the WAC in scoring at 21.6 points per game. ?I still don?t think we exactly understand what it?s going to take to win on the road.?
Carroll pointed out USU won its first seven home games in WAC action.
?We?ve been here before,? Carroll said. ?Last year we were not quite tough enough on the road to move up into the first or second spot in the WAC. This team will learn that. This team is pretty smart most of the time, and we really like to compete. So we will figure out how to win on the road.
?... We?re excited to get off to a 4-0 start, but you have to realize we are only a fourth of the way through the WAC games. We still have a lot of WAC games to go.?
That is the way the Bulldogs are looking at it after playing three straight road games. In their latest outing, they played New Mexico State down to the wire before falling, 63-54. That certainly got Morrill?s attention.
As did the play of guard Kyle Gibson, who scored 25 points in the game at Las Cruces, N.M. He made six 3-pointers, with most of them coming in the second half.
?He?s really become the guy we?ve looked for to carry us on his back,? Rupp said of Gibson. ?He is having to play out of position, we are having to play him as a big. We?re undersized this year. Next year we will move him out to the perimeter. ... He has a chance to be very, very good.?
The Aggies are well aware of Gibson.
?My biggest concern with him (Gibson) is trying to figure out a match up,? Morrill said. ?He?s really kind of a guard playing more of a post for them. He hurt us last year. He is a very fine player.?
While Morrill worries about Gibson and the rest of the undersized Bulldogs, Rupp has his concerns, as well.
?Utah State is a very, very good team,? Rupp said. ?Jaycee Carroll is an excellent player. He brings a lot of energy to that team. He?s got a huge motor and a big heart, and provides great leadership.
?That?s a team that?s really executing offensively and defensively on a very high level. They have five guys that really understand what needs to be done offensively and defensively to be successful, so that is going to be a great challenge for us.?
Especially since they are facing an Aggie team that has been shooting well and rebounding better than opponents. Those are two areas LTU has struggled with.
?We have a good start, but they have all been home games,? Carroll said. ?We still got a long road schedule before we get too excited about what we?ve been doing.?
USU hopes to get a little excited after tonight.
