Anybody know anything about the Stratosphere hotel in Las Vegas?

My wife just booked a room there for a couple of days in May. Neither one of us has ever been to Vegas so I figured my friends here at MJ's place could give me some opinions.

Thanks in advance.

Nice place but it's between the strip and downtown Vegas. I was told NOT to walk there --bad neighbor hood on the way but this was a few years back.
They have a oberservation deck on top (with a roller coaster on the very top)Go up at sunset then stay to see all the lights at night -pretty cool.

The stratosphere is located in the bad section of the Vegas strip. It's on the very end, and I was also told to watch myself going out alone. You'll need transportation to get anwhere due to its bad location. I've heard the rooms were decent, but nothing to write home about. I believe the guy who built it is now bankrupt along with the casino itself. I believe they filed chapter 11 a few years back.

If you plan on staying at the casino and do the majority of your wagering there, then the location shouldn't be that big of a deal. It's usually one of the cheaper stays at Vegas, and I assume your wife must've got a pretty good deal.

One word says it all.....

One word says it all.....

Stupak.

Nolan could probably tell ya a few stories about him.

Vegas World once stood ground in that exact location.
Tis located in "Naked City" crack whores are a dime a dozen around there. The good side is that the Olympic Garden Gentlemens Club is right across the street.
(Ask Gator or Bar Fly) ;)

The Sahara is the closest Major Hotel Casino that is near there.
The open a Nascar Cafe complete with a single track rollercoaster
"Speed" that suppose to be decent.

I would'nt advise tripping around the outside perimeter of your hotel. If ya rent a car and cruise the "Strip" you will be good to go.

Lanny (freshly moved & a happy camper).

Thanks for the note, Senor Capper.......

Re: Stratosphere.

Indeed, this was Stupak's baby, the realization of a lifelong dream after Stupak's Vegas World went belly up about eight years ago. Typical of Stupak, he spent too lavishly and eventually lost control to the financiers. Lyle Berman was eventually called in, took one look around, and the company summarily declared bankruptcy. Ever since then, it's been a boondogle in the middle of the Vegas Strip -- burdened with a horrid location (too far North on the Strip to be accessible to the center of action, yet not far down enough to be part of the Downtown scene). If it were not for the Tower, this hotel probably would have been demolished a year after it was built, as the tower is it's only distinguishing feature.

The Strat no longer tries to cater to the high rollers (necessary in the formative years of development) and has already fallen into the categoy of the Riviera, Stardust, and older properties built in the late 60s at the North end of the Strip. This is fine for those said properties which have already paid for themsleves many times over, but when you are juggling a debt load of $180 million and have a corporation run by idiots with blinders on, this casino is probably doomed to failure.

So far as ammendities -- I saw one show there with wife about three years ago and walked out. When they closed their successful poker room about a year ago, that was the last straw for me. I vowed never to set foot in that clusterphuck of a casino ever again.

It's a dump. Stay there and you (and your family) will think Vegas is a hellhole.

The location is what really kills the Strat. It is in the middle of nowhere. Keep trying other hotels a lot of them have pretty good deals right now.

Thanks for all the responses. She's already booked the room for a couple nights. With her airline discount, for us to cancel the rooms now - it will cost us more per night to cancel than the room went for. So, I will deal with cab rides.

I appreciate all the answers you all have given. It's our first time ever going to Vegas so at least now I will be smart enough to not walk around when maybe I might have said it's not a far walk, let's go for it.

Boiler - I'm arriving on the 12th. I will miss you by a week.

Everyone have a good weekend.

You'll forget everything about your accomodations if ya get you and your lady some Danny Gans tickets. There is NO better show in VEgas!! I'd try and book ASAP b/c everyone of his shows sell out. We had a hell of a time getting ours. Don't let yourself leave Vegas without seeing this show!!

Hey Senor Capper - my wife works for United Airlines. She's been flying for 4 years now. Mostly, we've been to Hawaii and to visit her family on the left coast. I use the flight benefits to go to games all over the country. I love to see new (or new to me) baseball parks. Last summer, I went to Pac Bell, PNC and Camden Yards. This year, back to PNC and Wrigley are the only ones I have planned so far. Would like to see Coors field too.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
ask for room in south tower above 10th floor. Higher the better.

You then get a nice view of the strip. sliding ten bucks to clerk when requesting it should insure it.

rooms have nice safes with diy-setting combinations.

I'm a walker and have no problems staying and strolling around the Strat.

I'll usually stroll to end of strip (4 miles by road), then get bus or cab at Mandalay Bay (bus uncrowded at that end) and ride back.

or bus to end, do buffet, then work it off walking back. But you gotta like walking.

Bell desk/concierge at Strat is one of best around. the Food isn't.

Casino is never crowded, but I like the dime baseball lines at LV Club and Stardust (where lots of serious bettors hang out). Hard Rock Casino also has dime lines. Or had, last year...

for general info on Las Vegas, there is tons at www.lvol.com and extremely nice and knowledgeable folks on discussion board there.

Have a fine time Mugs!!!
