I often wonderer when this would happen.

Girl dies after getting hit with a hockey puck.

Columbus, Oh. (Sporting Network)- Thirteen year old Brittanie Cecil died Monday night from injuries sustained from getting hit in the head with a hockey puck at an NHL game on Saturday night.

The girl was struck in the head during the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

"Our fans mean the world to us, Doug MacLean, Blue Jackets general manager, said. "This loss has profound effect on the entire Blue Jackets family." Cecil's death is believed to be the first death of a fan hit by a puck at an NHL game.

Witnesses said the shot by the Blue Jackets' Espen Knutsen flew over the high glass at the west end of the rink, glanced off another spectator and hit the girl on the head.

Girl Dies After Being Struck By Hockey Puck
Teen May Be First NHL Fan To Die After Hit

POSTED: 10:24 a.m. EST March 19, 2002
UPDATED: 1:47 p.m. EST March 19, 2002

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A 13-year-old girl died Monday night after she was struck by an errant hockey puck during Saturday's Columbus Blue Jackets National Hockey League game.

Brittanie Cecil's official cause of death has not been determined. Her body was taken to the Franklin County coroner's office for examination.

It is believed to be the first death of a fan hit by a puck at an NHL game.

"The Columbus Blue Jackets and Nationwide Arena are deeply saddened by this tragic accident that occurred during Saturday's game," Blue Jackets President and General Manager Doug MacLean said during a news conference.

NewsChannel 4 reported that the incident occurred during the second period of Saturday's game against Calgary.

Video of the incident showed that the puck flew over the high glass at the west end of the rink, glanced off another spectator and hit Cecil on the head.

She later was seen standing, being escorted from her seat. She received stitches to her head and was later transported via ambulance to Children's Hospital.

Cecil was an eighth-grader at Twin Valley South Middle School in West Alexandria, Ohio, located west of Dayton.

"In this small, rural school district, as with most similar school systems, the loss of a student shocks the whole community," the school district said in a statement. "The students and staff are deeply saddened by this sudden and painful loss."

Franklin County Coroner Bradley J. Lewis told NewsChannel 4 that he would handle the girl's autopsy. He said either swelling of her brain or a major blood vessel could have been damaged or torn, causing her death.

The Blue Jackets canceled Tuesday's 11:30 a.m. practice at Nationwide Arena.

On Nov. 28, a puck hit a 4-year-old boy on his cheek, below his left eye, during a Blue Jackets home game. He received stitches under his eye.

My apologies...

My apologies...

But I had tears for both sides, of course the little girl "Rest Her Soul", and the Humor.

Depending on your beliefs, all things happen for a reason and a way. I'm sure she's in a better place!
