Last night here in Austin my wife had the AC on to high So I didn't want to put on a sweatshirt since all of them had a hoodie attached. I had just come home from YMCA volleyball practice and my granddaughter who is in 8th grade and a head taller then everybody is learning to spike and block at the net.And in the fall will go out for her HS team anyway I went into the closet and put on a sweater since the AC is on automatic and looked in my closet and grabbed a sweater . It was a championship sweater from my HS basketball teams back in 1988 It had my school logo with a net and basket emblem . Think I have worn it 3 times in my life. As I put in on I thought back about how I got that sweater and the crazy Vinny J .
So lets go back to 1988. My HS basketball team won our conference, then sections then won our Regional vs he Long Island Champions and won the 1st game in the Final 4 at Glen Falls NY. Then lost the championship state finals to a team from Roschester NY .. Vinny was a 6'1 fd that could jump out of the gym Back in the day everyone would say " he had ups" Not sure of the term they use today..
About 3 months later I am in the Gym teaching talking to another PE teacher about a conversation I had with my Superintendent the day before about the school will not buy due to budget problems Varsity Championship Jackets for my team but buy a less expensive sweater. I was Ok with that. but unbeknownst to me was Vinny listening in to my conversation . Vinny had asked for a pass to the bathroom I gave him one. About 10 minutes later I hear on the radio " security to the Administrators wing " I ask the hall monitors what is going on. He tells me a student has entered the Superintendents office and threatened him I ask who was the student , They said one of your players Vinny J. State Police and local police have been called but they are going to handle it in house. Vinny will be suspended for 5 days. I'm thinking Uh oh I gave him a pass
About 15 minutes later a substitute teacher enters the gym and informs me the Superintendent wants to see me right now. I'm thinking it has to be about the pass.. Anyway I walk across the HS to the attached Adm wing and his secretary warms me her boss is upset. So I walk in and the 1st thing he says is " do you want a union rep " in here I say is this about a pass to the bathroom . He starts yelling at me saying I sent Vinny in his office about the varsity letter jackets. I vehemently told him no way and the Varsity Club is going to buy them for my team . He starts accusing me of purposely sending Vinny. Then he tells me this kid could of been arrested for verbal threats etc. Now I don't know anything except maybe Vinny was listening to me in the gym. So later the secretary tells me what happended . Vinny with my pass walks through the HS, main office and enters the adm wing He is telling everybody he has a pass. He Knocks on my Superintendent door and tells him I played Freshman JV and this year Varsity. Our school has won 2 championships and I have seen players wear these jackets in front of me I finally win one and you aren't buying our team one . You MF I want my jacket you _ and I'm sure Vinny used a few curse words ..Any way I told my supe I had nothing to do with his reaction and maybe he over heard me telling somebody.
Epilogue..sorry this is long and boring
As I was leaving my supe's office and had my back to him he said " Box find out what those jackets cost maybe we can find some money in the budget. " Vinny got his suspension reduced to 3 days out of school . I got new championship jackets and with the extra money from the Varsity Club they bought sweaters The sweater I wore last night .. My supe was fired a year or two later for other things. I left my school after 27 years and became Principal of another school I got a call from one of Vinnys sisters a few years later that he was killed in Brooklyn in a shooting . I just put my head down and cried. He was Number 33 and he had " ups"

35 years and many miles away it's funny you pulled out that particular sweater and it led to a post on the forum. :toast:

thanks madjack didn't even share that story with my wife. I have a team picture of that team and when we took team pictures it had to be organized and everybody serious because we knew if we made the final 4 in the state tournament that picture would be in their Final 4 program I would be in the back row and kneeling a bit so my 6'6 forward looked about 6'10. One year I knelled to much and the 6'2 player looked about 6'6 and my bigs looked 6'11.. I knew teams from all over the state would be seeing my team for the 1st time.
The picture I have Vinny is sideways a little Joe F was a 6'6 freshman and transferred to Boys and Girls HS in Brooklyn He played D-1 for UMass and the night he was going to play St Peters in Jersey City in our backyard we had about 8 teachers that were going to the game Just before school ended I get a call from an asst coach at Umass and he tells me Joe Has been suspended that afternoon . The team was at a mall in NJ that afternoon and Joe stole kiwi shoe polish from a store at the mall . Kwi polish are those little round shoe polish cans . Unreal He was sent back to Amherst and they saved us a trip down to NJ.
Also in that team picture is Darly Jeter who 2 years later kills the 1st woman NYC cop and is doing life. But there is also Floyd Jackson.Laroi Martin who 3 years later hits 7 3's in a regional; game and I believe the record still stands. There are a few more success stories in that picture but I could do a " movie of the week" on almost every player.. But they all got their jackets and all i have left is that white team sweater.. and a lot of memories

I also remember at our awards banquet at the end of the year when we give out the trophies and jackets I asked Vinny to please just go up and receive your trophy jacket and sweater with some class. But I was asking to much from him He was convinced the only reason why we were getting those jackets was because of his outburst So when his named was called he had the "bop " and "swagger " as he left his table and walked up to the podium The crowd roared with applause because in his mind he did 3 days of OUt of school suspension for those jackets . And thinking back today he was probably right. Last night I was looking at that team picture with Vinny's pose and thought it just took me one walk to my walk in closet to remember a story so long ago. What a waste of a life. And when I look at that picture there are 2 other players that are dead, one doing life and a NYC police officer and 2 NYC firemen . of that team only 2 players I'm still in touch with.

josh we have to get together one of these days I went to almost all of the Bobcats games I just bought season football tickets . Lets hook up during football season I have end zone tickets and yet can sit anywhere in the stadium .. Been thinking about crazy Vinnie all day . He was a character.. he also at some point became a 5% er. A lot of black kids in the early 80's from NYC changed their religion to a muslim order. 5 percenters became a very popular in thing. They weren't allowed to eat at Macdonalds because the grease on the grill had a pork fat when they cooked it. So Burger King was a good substitute of because they broiled their burgers. But depending on who we were playing after the game we would stop to get something to eat. There were a lot more of MacDonalds around so we told the team that we would be stopping at a Mickey Dees after the game Those muslims and 5 % ers please bring your own food on the bus.
When the game was over Vinnie was the 1st getting off the bus at Mikey's D and said tonight I am not a 5 per center please give me my coupon for a Big Mac,fries milk shake etc And about 4 or 5 other players would follow Vinnie .. lol its amazing I can remember those stories like yesterday and can't find my car at the Costgo parking lot lets hook up this fall for a Tex St football game . I have an open seat in the end zone right next to me hope your doing good . Your one of the few people here that know I am a real person

thanks English I just read a book about NYC guy that goes to a bar in NYC and then goes to Vietnam and delivers a beer to all his drinking buddies fighting the war. I heard they are making a movie on the book and I forgot the name of the book ..
Today on facebook I got a message from Louie U my 1st pt gd from NYC and the Dominican Republic He was about 5'6 and had a handle with the ball. Years later I am a principal at another school and my secretary rings me and says I think I have one of your former players on the phone calling you from NYC . I answer the phone and hear " coach wow Guess who this is " I have no idea and ask when did you play for me > He says " i was your 1st ever pt gd and you always said I was the craziest Dominican you ever had. " I then knew it was louie uiey . He has 3 kids and 2 grandkids and is in charge of security at Manhattan College. He saw one of Manhattan players move in the gym with a t-shirt from his school Louie went up to him and asked him do you know Coach Box. I knew the MC players very well and he told Louie where I was at,.. the next day was when I got the call .. he made a play in a game that was the winning basket and Bill polian the future GM of the Carolina panthers was the official He negated the winning basket and said he palmed the ball when he made the steal and winning layup. After watching it on video there was no palm Loiue made a wind shield move that faked the def player everyone in the gym and unfortunately the ref. We lost by one but I mentioned it to louie and he didn't even remember the play. I have had that play in my head for 25 years and Louie didn't even remember it

Sounds like a plan Box. Looking forward to hearing how racquet ball is going. I still think you're perfect for a podcast, even if you just told stories or shared history. Hope the weather missed you tonight.

Ty played 8u Pee Wee football last year. He was one of two 7 year olds that started both ways. Tight End/Tackle & Defensive End. We played at Cowboy stadium and I made sure every one of our kids got a carry. Here was his.

As an 8 year old this year, I'll make sure he switches the ball to the outside when coming around end.

Josh that was outstanding. Is that a San marcus pee wee football team I have never been to the new stadium in Dallas Was at the old Irving stadium and my last year at North Texas we played 2 or 3 games there. But in 1969 my freshman year at North Texas went to the NY Giant-Cowboy game at the Cotton Bowl . My roomate a and I made a sign with a sheet and snuck it into the the stadium . We had "Hi CBS" and Dallas 5-0 and then a long came Jones " That was Homer Jones probably the best ever wr ever for the Giants . A few years back my wife and I were driving thru Pittsberg Texas and I told my wife this was Homer Jones hometowm Maybe we will see a billboard with " Home of Homer Jones " but we went thru their main downtown and there was nothing to be seen . Maybe forgotten in his home town but #45 was the fastest and best wr ever that wore a Giant uniform
Glad your coaching your son. I coach my granddaughter in YMCA volleyball and we play tomorrow. So far we are 3-0 . What a storm the other night I;m sure you got it too But we need the rain. Take care and we will hook up this fall ..

Yes, CFPO football here in San Marcos. His age group is Pee Wee. He'll be in juniors two years from now. When we went to Dallas for that game, we took the boys to a park near the Cotton Bowl and I did not miss the opportunity to get a picture. I saw USC drop 55 on my Red Raiders in '95. I think they scored twice before my tortilla even hit the ground.

Baseball will be done by the end of June, then football will start up in August. Once we have our schedule it will be easier to see which game will work out best. Sure looking forward to seeing you again. Enjoy these cool mornings, they won't last much longer.

In Orlando for a week visiting my daughter and her twins. Going to her hotel and having dinner in Disney tonight . Will catch up with you when I get back to Austin One of the schools I was principal at before I retired was a football powerhouse in our area, Their Basketball team was avg and consisted of football players trying to play basketball I think I was 6-0 vs this school But I told my players these guys are physical so we need to use our speed and quickness tonight. But this school dominated in football. I was principal there for 3 as principal and 6 as an asst Principal. . But I realized why we dominated football. Our pewee football team ran the same offense as our Freshman and JV , By the time these kids got to HS they were ahead of all the area;s teams. I know Texas football down here is big and the peewee leagues are big and really can't compare to the NY ones. I'm glad your son is playing. But it took me about a month to realize that our head football coach runs the pee wee leagues and that is why our school dominated . When I was hired the head basketball coach and I are good friends. I didn't want him intimidated that I was coming even though I was an administrator now and no longer coaching. But he let me improve his offense and defense. and ran my offense which I stole from Tom Davis at BC and Stanford All basketball coaches steal from each other. They improved in my 10 years there.
Anyway our football team dominated because of youth football and its foundation . Our football coach and I didn't see eye to eye because he ran up scores on schools and I never believed in that. He was a good coach but was replacing a legend coach so he needed to make his mark . At one of our football banquets I made him invite all the coaches in the pee wee league to the dinner as a thanks for creating this jr hs jv farm team . He never appreciated what these coaches created on that level but I did .. you take care and we will hook up in the fall .
