Virginia Tech QB faces surgery
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Noel will undergo exploratory surgery on his injured left knee and will not start the Hokies' next game.
Noel tore his anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice and opted not to have surgery. Trainer Mike Goforth said Noel has been limited for about three weeks by a "clicking" in the knee, and will have the procedure done today.
Bryan Randall will start No. 12 Virginia Tech's next game against Marshall on Sept. 12.
Goforth expects Noel to be listed as probable for that contest.
"No one's worked harder to be a part of this football team than Grant Noel," coach Frank Beamer said. "Medically, this is what needs to be done right now. We hope he'll be back for the Marshall game, but there is no guarantee of that."
