ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, July 14 -- The All-Star game has passed
and trade rumors are running rampant across baseball as teams realizing their
season may not extend into October look to unload salaries and acquire
prospects. With Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and Diamondbacks pitcher
Randy Johnson rumored to be available for the right price, WagerOnSports.com
today released odds on which teams Garciaparra and Johnson will finish the
2004 MLB with.
The premium sports betting destination online, WagerOnSports.com has
dismissed the trade reports and believes that both Nomar and "The Big Unit"
will remain with their current teams. The oddsmakers list the odds of
Garciaparra finishing this season with Boston as a 1/8 favorite (i.e., win $1
for every $8 bet), while the odds that Johnson remains a Diamondback are at
1/4.
WagerOnSports.com feels that if he is traded, the most likely destination
for Nomar is the Florida Marlins who are listed at 2/1 odds to acquire the Red
Sox's shortstop. There could be another intra-league battle in the city of
Chicago as both the White Sox (5/1) and Cubs (10/1) may enter a bidding war
for Garciaparra. The Anaheim Angels (10/1) and New York Mets (20/1) may also
be looking for some infield help and could make a run at Nomar.
WagerOnSports.com has also created odds on the unlikely scenario of the Red
Sox dealing their prized shortstop to the rival New York Yankees, which is
listed at 250/1.
"Although the most likely scenario is that he remains with the Red Sox,
his impending free agency and disgruntled appearance during the 13 inning loss
to the Yankees at the beginning of the month could make Nomar a prime trade
candidate," said Simon Noble, CEO of WagerOnSports.com. "If Nomar is dealt,
don't be surprised if he becomes another rent-a-player for the World Champion
Florida Marlins who are desperately looking to add some offense to their
lineup."
If the rebuilding Diamondbacks decide to move the best lefthander in the
league, WagerOnSports.com lists the New York Yankees as the most likely
destination for Randy Johnson at 2/1 odds. The Yankees' bid for the Johnson
could face some stiff competition from the rival Boston Red Sox, which
WagerOnSports.com lists at 6/1 to sign the lefthander. Having won the season
series versus the Yankees for the first time ever, the New York Mets (20/1)
may make a pitch to upset George Steinbrenner's bid to land "The Big Unit."
Other teams looking for pitching help as they push toward a playoff run
include the Anaheim Angels (10/1), Los Angeles Dodgers (10/1), Chicago Cubs
(12/1) and St. Louis Cardinals (20/1).
"With several teams looking to shore up their starting pitching for a
second half playoff run, Randy Johnson will certainly be the first pitcher any
team inquires about, but the odds are Arizona will decide to keep their future
Hall of Famer," continued Mr. Noble. "The Yankees have publicly declared their
desire to bring 'The Big Unit' to 'The Big Apple', so if the Diamondbacks
trade Johnson, there's little doubt George Steinbrenner will pull out all the
stops to secure the lefthander."
