WBC welterweight title on the line Saturday
Dec. 6, 2007

Floyd Mayweather Jr. will defend his World Boxing Council welterweight title against British boxer Ricky Hatton in a showdown of undefeated fighters Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

While Mayweather is still favored to successfully defend his WBC crown, the line is tightening, with Hatton dropping from a 230-moneyline underdog to 190.

Boxing bettors can also wager on how many rounds the fight will last (Over 11?, -250; Under 11?, +200), whether Hatton or Mayweather will win by Knock Out, TKO, or be Disqualified (Hatton +425; Mayweather +300), whether Hatton or Mayweather will win by Decision (Hatton +350; Mayweather -125), or if the fight will end in a Draw (+2000).

Mayweather, 30, (38-0, 24 KOs) is generally recognized as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, while Hatton (43-0, 31 KOs) is generally recognized as the top junior welterweight in the world.

The fight will be broadcast on Pay Per View, and has been sold to 2.4 million households ? tying the PPV record for a boxing match set last May, when Mayweather fought six-division champion and WBC junior middleweight titleholder Oscar De La Hoya.

In a decision that was booed by fans, Mayweather won that bout by a split decision, winning the title and improving his record to 38-0.

Hatton, 29, hails from Manchester, England and is considered by many as one of the greatest British fighters of all-time and is ranked among the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world by Ring Magazine.

He?s a two-time IBF and IBO Light Welterweight Champion. He relinquished his IBF belt, then stepped back down to the weight class and beat Juan Urango. He was the WBA Welterweight Champion, but relinquished that title last year. Hatton is also the former WBU, WBA, Light Welterweight Champion.

Hatton is considered a working-class hero in England. He's a dedicated fan of the Manchester City soccer club. He plays darts and drinks Guinness draft beer to excess when not in training.

During the weigh-in Wednesday at the MGM Grand, the boxers had to be separated following an exchange of leaning contacts during a staredown after speaking.
