Final Score: Fairfield 75, Loyola-Maryland 56
Fairfield, CT (Sports Network) - Terrence Todd and Michael Bell each tallied 20 points in leading the Fairfield Stags back in a 75-56 win over the Greyhounds of Loyola-Maryland in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play from the Arena at Harbor Yards.
The loss for the Greyhounds (0-18, 0-9 MAAC) was their 31st in a row, taking into account the 13 straight defeats that finished off the 2002-03 campaign.
Rob Thomson added 14 points and nine boards, while DeWitt Maxwell tallied 11 points in the win for Fairfield (10-8, 3-4), snapping a two-game losing streak.
The Greyhounds were paced by Charlie Bell who posted a game-high 25 points, shooting 9-of-20 from the field and 5-of-10 behind the three-point line in the process. Bernard Allen added 11 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort as well.
Loyola appeared to be well on its way to putting the lengthy losing skid behind it, shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, leading to a 32-26 edge at the break.
But after the intermission the Stags erupted and made 61.9 percent from the floor, including 6-of-9 beyond the arc, not to mention converting all 17 chances at the free-throw line in taking the 19-point victory at home.
In addition to winning the battle of the boards, 37-32, Fairfield was a perfect 17-of-17 at the stripe on the afternoon, while the Greyhounds missed all but three of their 14 opportunities at the line.
The all-time record for futility is currently held by Grambling State which lost 33 straight decisions between December 6, 1999 and December 16, 2000. The last win for the Greyhounds took place more than a year ago at this point, a 74-69 overtime affair versus Rider on January 19, 2003. Loyola could break the mark when it faces off against the Manhattan Jaspers, the top team in the MAAC, on February 4.
In addition to Loyola, the only other Division I team without a single win this season is North Carolina A&T which is now 0-16 after a 74-55 setback to Florida A&M in Mid-Eastern Conference action on Saturday.
