Defenseman Jay McKee skipped Tuesday's practice because he is recovering from a flu that also is affecting captain Stu Barnes, who skated Tuesday. McKee likely will play tonight. Winger Vaclav Varada returns tonight from his one-game suspension. . . . The Sabres will not hold their usual gameday skate this morning, so the players and coaches can rest up from the Western trip.

i believe there is a good possibility of Vokoun in net for Nashville(tonight), who plays tomorrow at Philly. Vokoun won both meetings against carolina last year, and therefore would be a good choice to start tonight with Dunham going on Thursday...just a thought

Owen Nolan Will Stay In San Jose For Two Days To Rest His Sore Back
After a doctor's visit in San Jose yesterday, it was determined that Owen Nolan will rest his sore back the next two games and try to rejoin the club in Montreal on Sunday.

By missing the back-to-back contests with Detroit and Columbus tonight and tomorrow, Nolan's back will benefit from five days rest between the Edmonton and Montreal contests. The injury is not considered serious, just something that needs rest to heel.

The Edmonton Oilers have announced defenceman Eric Brewer has suffered a sprained left shoulder.

Brewer is out of the lineup day-to-day after injuring the shoulder in a 4-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday, January 21st.

The injury will not keep the Vernon, British Columbia native out of the lineup for Team Canada at the Olympics in Salt Lake City.

OFFENSIVE-MINDED

Murray has tried to find ways to squeeze more offense out of the Ducks. Practices have been focused on drills aimed toward that end.

Much of Tuesday's workout was given over to a full-rink, three-on-three competition.

"Did you see what the score was? Two-to-one," Murray said. "I gave Guy (Charron, assistant coach) grief one time because he blew the whistle to end a shift when we had a breakaway. I said, 'Let them score a goal.' ''

The Ducks have been held to one goal in four of their past six games, two or fewer in 21 of the past 24.

Arturs Irbe will draw starting netminder duties for the Hurricanes on Wednesday despite being pulled when Vancouver scored their third goal Monday night. Barrasso replaced Irbe 5:38 into the second period Monday and allowed just one goal before the Canucks got three in the game??s closing eight minutes.

??I took Archie out and it was 5-4 and it was a good idea at that point,?? said Maurice. ??I didn??t make the change because I thought Arturs was responsible for those three. I think he got three real bad bounces on them, but at 3-1 I??m looking to change the culture of the game. We hadn??t really gotten into the fight yet, we weren??t really scratching and clawing yet at that point, and I didn??t want to see that game get to 5-1 when it didn??t have to or on him. It wasn??t necessarily that he did anything wrong to get it to 3-1, but as a coach, when you get in that situation, especially after the way things went in Vancouver when I left him, I just didn??t want to see that happen. I thought Tom played very well until 5-4.??

Barrasso missed Carolina??s practice on Tuesday with a case of the flu, but Maurice said Barrasso did not have flu symptoms Monday night and he does not expect Barrasso to miss any potential action between the pipes.
