That might be a mistake...Marquette is a scrappy veteran team playing against a very young Tennessee squad...This a typical trick of the book...put a traditional "public team" or "power" at a low number and sucker in all who do not know that they are not that good this year.

Good Luck

not sure...maybe wise guy money....But, I am telling you the wrong team is favorite in this game...I am not telling what to do...just trying give you some insight on this year's Tennesse team...they are going to struggle and if this were the middle of this season and Tenn had already been exposed (which they will) and they were playing on a neutral site (which they are)...Marquette would be 6-8 point favorite.

Slay's return should give Vols big boost in Alaska

By Mike Strange, News-Sentinel sportswriter

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - As Tennessee's basketball team will find out this week, the meek and the weak don't inherit much of anything here on the edge of the wilderness.
Tuesday's front page of the Anchorage Daily News included an account of neighborhood skiers being surprised by a grizzly bear. A popular guide book includes a page titled "Best Ways to Die."

Literally speaking, the Vols won't find themselves in a life-or-death situation tonight in Sullivan Arena as the Great Alaska Shootout tips off. But it will be survival of the fittest when they take on an athletic Marquette team that loves to crash the boards.

Tennessee (1-0) faces the Golden Eagles (2-0) in the second game of a doubleheader. Thanks to the four-hour time difference, it will be a 1:45 a.m. start for Vol Network listeners back in East Tennessee.

Indiana plays host Alaska-Anchorage in the opener, with two more first-round games on Thursday.

"Marquette is a very physical team," UT coach Buzz Peterson said Tuesday. "The emphasis they always have is on rebounding.

"That's a big key to this game, winning the boards."

The Vols got outrebounded 41-31 by Tennessee Tech in the opener. UT's fatigue appeared to be a factor late in the second half as Tech hammered the offensive glass.

Tonight, Tennessee will have a ninth scholarship player available, though to what extent remains to be seen.

Ron Slay, the 6-foot-8 junior forward, has practiced twice since the Vols arrived in Alaska and says he's ready to test the right leg that sustained a stress fracture on Oct. 28.

"Ron will give us a boost," Peterson said. "I'm going to leave it up to him how long he can go."

Slay, who averaged 12.9 points and 5.3 rebounds last year, said he has experienced spurts of pain since returning to practice, but not enough to keep him on the bench.

"I don't think he (Peterson) should depend on me to block any shots," Slay said, "but I'll take the charges and play defense.

"I was a little bit rusty in practice, but I'll pick it up in the game."

The Vols and Golden Eagles meet for the first time since Marquette helped open Thompson-Boling Arena on Dec. 3, 1987. The only contact they've had since was in 1994 when UT hired Kevin O'Neill away from the Milwaukee school.

Third-year coach Tom Crean has three starters back from a 15-14 team, plus a couple of impact newcomers in guards Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener.

Senior point guard Cornell Henry is coming off a 31-point outburst in a 102-49 rout of Chicago State. He'll be defended by UT's Thaydeus Holden.

"We might be a little taller in spots," said Peterson, "but they're very strong and physical.

"Their front-court guys are all about 6-7, 225 pounds. So we've got to do a good job of boxing them out."

Slay's return, even on a limited basis, is good news in more ways than one. He brings not only size and experience to bolster a front line manned by freshmen Elgrace Wilborn and Brandon Crump, but he is also an emotional catalyst.

"He brings a lot of emotion to the game," said Vincent Yarbrough, "and a lot of our players respect him. They'll go that much harder knowing he's out there."

TOURNEY TIME: The Vols played some of their best ball of the season last year in winning the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii. However, they had 11 games under their belt with a veteran lineup, quite a switch from this year.

"When we went to Hawaii," said Yarbrough, "we had a sense of what we were supposed to be doing.

"This is only our second game. Right now we don't have a sense of what everybody's doing. And then having the post players (Slay, Marcus Haislip and Andy Ikeakor) out really doesn't help. We're still making do with what we have."

If UT beats Marquette, it plays at 12:30 a.m. (EST) Saturday (Friday night). If the Vols lose, they play at 4 p.m. (EST) Friday.

The first-round pairings Thursday are Texas against Oregon State and St. John's against Gonzaga.

NEW RULES: The Shootout will use several experimental rules, most notably a wider lane (16 feet, instead of 12) and jump balls rather than the possession arrow.

Wilborn, for one, said he didn't like the wider lane when the Vols used it in their exhibition loss to Kentucky ABA. It forced the post players out so far there were spacing problems with the wings. Peterson said he might make adjustments in the offense, but predicted the NCAA will adopt the wider lane in the next couple of years to clean up post play.

PLAYERS OK: Wilborn and Crump were somewhat sore after being rear-ended in an automobile accident at 2 a.m. Sunday in Knoxville. Both practiced, however, and will play.

Peterson said the players had an acceptable explanation for being out late and were not violating curfew. The curfew, established by the seniors, is midnight two days before a game and 11 p.m. the day before a game.
