Nuggets
The Nuggets have won 19 of their last 23, and nine straight. Their team camaraderie is at an all time high. Tonight, they get to face off against the semi-dysfunctional Knicks and five former Nuggets - Carmelo Anthony, Marcus Camby, Raymond Felton, Kenyon Martin and J.R. Smith. This will be Melo?s first appearance in Denver since forcing a trade in February 2011. But no one is Denver is complaining about getting rid of some old guys and some guys with bad attitudes (Felton excluded). The Nuggets could be viewed as the bigger beneficiary, receiving current starters Danilo Gallinari and Kosta Koufos, along with starting-quality talent in reserves Wilson Chandler and Mozgov. Felton also came to Denver in the trade but was later sent to Portland in exchange for Andre Miller. All told, the Nuggets have ten players on their current roster that are there because of this deal.
?I enjoyed (watching) them early in the year,? Karl said. Yes, early in the year would be key to the Knicks.
The Knicks play one of the slowest paces in the league, and no wonder, since they are the oldest roster in the league. Tonight they get to go up against the fast high flying Nuggets, the third youngest team in the league, with one of the deepest benches. The Nuggets are relentless through four quarters with their attacking style. The Knicks live and die by long jump shots, and they are going to have to make a lot of them to beat the Nuggets, who thrive on much higher percentage shots.
The Knicks are coming off a season low (for any team) 27.4% shooting from the field. The Warriors just had their best defensive game since the 1953 season (the last time they held an opponent to 63 points). Anthony needed an hour of treatment after the game, and has said that he won?t be 100% for the rest of the season. Mike Woodson on the game: ?We played one quarter tonight. That was it. That was the first quarter. We had nothing in our tank.? So, what have you got in your tank for Denver?
The Knicks get only 9.8% of their points in transition, while the Nuggets get 18.7% of their in transition, highlighting the difference in approach and style that these two teams have. The Knicks defense has struggled recently, and the only play they can really guard is the post up (thank you Tyson), which the Nuggets rarely run. In their first meeting this season back in December, the Knicks gave up 55.6% from the field to Denver, the Nuggets outscored them by 30 points in the paint, and still the Knicks managed to win, probably due to the 16 turnovers committed by Denver and the hot three point shooting by the Knicks. These are two completely different teams now, and the final score should reflect the directions they are both moving. Ty Lawson is playing as well as any other point guard in the league right now, and his ball and game management have much improved since the first meeting.
''This game is going to be crazy,'' Lawson said. ''It will be exciting. Probably the most exciting game of the year. There is going to be so much energy in the gym.''
?We?re real confident,? Lawson said. ?Everybody?s playing well, playing together. We?re on a good streak right now. Everybody?s confidence is through the roof.?
Nuggets and old... just don?t mix.
Nuggets -8 x2
Good luck...
