Week 17 Betting Action
By Mike Harrison/ SPORTSBETTING.COM
This could be one of the best Week 17 Sundays in years?or it could be a big dud, but indications are for the former.
Aside from this being your last chance to wager on a full Sunday lineup, the Sunday schedule is liberally sprinkled with meaningful matchups.
There are teams trying to book a post-season ticket, teams trying to improve their playoff lot, teams trying to head into the playoffs with a little momentum after slumping down the stretch (hello Arizona)?it should be a great day of pigskin action.
Let?s have a look at a few of the matchups:
- Even the New York Mets are starting to chuckle at the Denver Broncos?.Mike Shanahan?s team had the AFC West wrapped up?end of the story. But a funny thing happened on the way to the division crown ? they lost three of their last five games, including ugly defeats at home to the Oakland Raiders (yes, believe it) and the Buffalo Bills, two teams that are both 2-7 straight up in their last nine games.
Guess what Denver fans? You?re going on the road in Week 17 hoping your team can beat a surging San Diego Charger team. The winner goes to the playoffs, the loser...well the loser is a loser, especially if you?re Denver.
The home team is listed as a 9-point favorite with the Total set at 50.5.
The Broncos haven?t been impressive on the road against this division rival racking up a 9-11 record SU and 9-9-2 ATS in the last 20 visits to southern California.
Looking at the Over/Under numbers when these two meet at this venue we have an Under pattern, as they?ve recorded 7 overs and 13 unders in that same time frame.
If you look at Denver?s last nine visits to San Diego in December, the song remains the same as the Broncos have gone 2-7 SU and 2-5-2 ATS and there have been 2 overs and 7 unders.
SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting the betting public solidly backing the Chargers, with 74% of the action coming in on the home side. The ?Over? is also getting the lean, with 57% hoping for 51 or more points to be scored.
- Many of you will remember that classic Monday nighter a few years back between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, where the Dolphins had a sizable lead and Arnold Schwarzenegger, a guest in the broadcast booth, predicted a win.
The prediction came to fruition in one of the greatest comebacks in Monday night history.
There is potential for an equally classic game this Sunday as the Jets host the Dolphins with the AFC East title, potentially, up for grabs?the Jets are 2.5-point home favorites with the Total set at 42.
For bettors, the historical numbers all favor the Jets, as Miami has gone 4-16 SU and 2-15-3 ATS in the last 20 games overall (that?s right they?ve only covered twice in 20 games vs. New York). When playing in New York vs. the Jets, the Dolphins have posted a mark of 6-14 SU and 5-12-3 ATS the last 20 games.
Miami has gone 1-1 SU and 0-2 ATS the last two December games in the Big Apple.
Still the Dolphins come into the game on a four-game winning streak and have taken the Al Davis ?Just win baby? philosophy?as they have the most interesting and varies gameplan in the league week in and week out.
Bettors have warmed up to this Dolphin team over the weeks and this Sunday matchup is no exception?against the spread stats be damned, the betting public is lining up on the Fish, with Miami getting 68% of the action in this tilt. Brett Favre?s name no longer holds the sway it used to for many bettors and his recent play has been rough to watch.
Aside from the division crown, there is the whole Chad Pennington-Favre storyline as well (which we?ll all be sick of hearing about by game time).
This should be a good one though and I?ll be tuned in.
- The Dallas Cowboys have lowered expectations as the season has progressed.
Picked by many to take the NFC East, the Cowboys are now treading water in the playoff race and can only clinch a Wild Card berth at best; in Dallas? way, the Philadelphia Eagles who are looking for a playoff berth of their own.
Oddsmakers have the home team Eagles listed as a 1.5-point favorite and the Total set at 42.5.
The City of Brotherly Love has shown anything but to Dallas as the Cowboys are 2-7 SU in its last nine visits to Philly as well as 3-5-1 ATS.
While many laud Dallas Cowboy QB Tony Romo as a great QB the one knock against him is his reputation to fade down the stretch and in Dallas? last nine games in December they have gone 3-6 SU and 1-8 ATS.
Still Dallas is a pretty popular team with the betting public and online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting this road dog is getting the action as 77% of the volume comes in on them.
- Rookie QBs have done well this year and Baltimore?s Joe Flacco is a prime example.
Flacco has seen action in every game and the Baltimore Ravens are 10-5 SU and 11-4 ATS thanks in part to his play.
The Ravens are also in the hunt for a playoff spot and a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday?Baltimore is listed as a heavy 12.5-point home fave?will bode well for the team.
The Ravens do well when favored by more than 8-points as they are 19-1 SU and 14-6 ATS in that situation.
The Ravens are 4-4 SU and 3-4-1 ATS against the Jags in the last eight home games. Jacksonville is way, way out of the playoff picture, so their motivation is a big question mark. The Ravens have a playoff berth in sight, which is why we see that big line. Bettors think they are going to lay the boots to the Jags, as an overwhelming 86% majority is going Baltimore?s way.
Enjoy all the drama as the day unfolds.
