Round 1 play (2pts):

Matt Kuchar to beat Martin Kaymer -105 @ Bet365 [also available @ 5Dimes]
Opposing Kaymer who appears to be having a post-Major-year letdown - he did win his season-opening event in Abu Dhabi, but has secured just two other strokeplay top-10 finishes this year. The causes of the 'post-Major-year letdown' are clear from his interview this week: "the last, let's say, three, four months, it has been ridiculous in Germany. There has been so much media around my person, about my family, about my personal life, about a lot." The scrutiny is only intensifying as he is one week away from defending his PGA Championship title, so this could easily be a difficult week, particularly as he averages 71.33 around Firestone (Kuchar averages 68.75). Since the start of last season, Kuchar leads Kaymer 9-2-1 h2h in strokeplay events in the U.S. and 8-3-1 h2h in round 1 in those events, so the value should be in opposing the PGA Champion this week.

[unofficial rd1 system plays: Hanson tb Woodland +108; Watson tb Woodland -111; Toms tb Jacobson +100; Casey tb Glover +110; Jacobson tb Woodland -110; Mickelson tb McIlroy +100]

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
There are multiple schools of thought on almost any aspect of capping, and one of those ?controversies? is whether or not, as a rule, the majors are tougher or easier to cap than the week-in-and-week-out grind of the regular events . . .
No question my record is stronger in the 4 or 6 or 12 or so biggest events of the seaon, than is my record over the grind of weekly events . . . with notable exceptions, however, being a poor record in the P.G.A. at Wentworth, and the two week stretch of Firestone and the P.G.A. . . . The sideshow in Reno has been a much better event for me over the years than the two August events just noted.

Having said that, I have to agree with the sentiment I heard voiced several times this week about this event, to-wit: "Plenty of value bets . . . so it's hard to draw a line but I need to. One I had to take . . ."

But that sentiment would hardly explain winding up with this motley crew:

Outrights:

Hunter Mahan(33/1) e.w.
Justin Rose(66/1) e.w.
Scott Stallings(200/1) e.w.
Adam Scott(45/1) e.w.
Stuart Appleby(200/1) e.w.

Tiger Woods(16/1) WIN Only P.G.A.

So I best do some explaining . . . Mahan seems well-suited and overdue and a few sound bites seem supportive; I'm often right about Rose when he's off, but rarerly right when he's at his best, but I think he can go well this week; Stallings would surprise me more if he wasn't in a decent position when he hits the generally crucial finishing stretch on Saturday; I actually like Scott to bookend his season with the Masters and the P.G.A., but right now I like him enough next week to see him as a threat this week; and it would be criminal if Appleby was not in lostinamerica's fold for any event at Firestone in which he did well, so the 200/1 is actually a nice opportunity :mj07: . . . I think the demands of driving at Firestone will be too much for Tiger this week, who has to have rust even if he has a swing, but some return of his peerless short game is going to happen at some not too distant time and remind everyone of his still future potential.

not happy about laying so much chalk. small plays though:

Rory -150 over Mahan (just teed off sorry for late)

Mahan coming off a couple of pretty bad tourneys. Rory having a career year. Rory usually starts fast in tourneys while Mahan has a good round or two on friday/saturday in tourneys he plays well in

Tigaaaaah -170 over Clarke

Clarke in hangover mode after winning the open. Tiger owns Akron. Hurt or not he should play well this weekend

Round 2 play (4pts):

Fredrik Jacobson to beat Gary Woodland -110 @ Stan James
Difficult to argue against Jacobson's form - his last three starts have yielded finishes of 14th (U.S. Open), 1st (Travelers Championship) and 16th (British Open). He has beaten all but a few in very high quality fields and won on the PGA Tour in a lesser quality field. Woodland did play well last week, but was found wanting on the last day and that may have carried over to his disappointing first round. Such a big-hitting will be very hit-and-miss, but in a WGC event, it should be the more consistent and better quality player who should prevail.

[unofficial rd2 system plays: Fowler tb Manassero -150; Watney tb Watson -120; Fowler tb Watson +105; Garcia tb Goosen -129]

Round 3 play (2pts):

Steve Stricker to beat Rory McIlroy +100 @ Bet365 [available generally]
Can only see Stricker continuing his good form in round 3. He currently lies 13th and has finished in the top-20 in every one of his starts since February; McIlroy can't even claim that in either of his last two starts. Twice a winner in his last four starts and a top-10 finishes in each of the last two years here, McIlroy will need to play well to keep up with Stricker at the moment.

[unofficial rd3 system plays: Furyk tb Manassero -110; Atwal tb Larrazabal -105; Goosen tb Watson +104; Points tb Stallings +100]

Round 4 play (2pts):

Nick Watney to beat Francesco Molinari -119 @ 5Dimes [available generally]
Molinari starts the final round in 14th place and this is his best performance for some time - he has missed his last two cuts on the European Tour and his last four cuts on the PGA Tour. On that basis, he appears less likely to continue his unexpected form into the final round than Watney who won last time out on the PGA Tour and ranks 7th in Final Round Scoring Average this year.

[unofficial rd4 system plays: Fowler tb Day +110; Scott tb Woodland -140; Watney tb Watson -111; Cink tb Baddeley -111; Day tb Bradley -132]
