Racers playing for home court
in first round of OVC Tournament
(Feb. 23, 2005) -- The Murray State Racers will look to avenge a 61-58 home loss against Southeast Missouri State on Feb. 5, when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., Thursday to face the Redhawks. Fourth-place Murray State also must win its remaining two games to put the pressure on the teams behind them in the standings in order to host a first-round home game in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
"This is a big week for us," Racer head coach Mick Cronin said. "We have an opportunity here to position ourselves for the best possible seed in the OVC Tournament."
Since the OVC went to its current tournament format in 1997, where the top four seeds host a first-round home game, Murray State has hosted a first-round game every year. Now, the Racers are in danger of keeping that streak alive because of the overall competitiveness of the conference.
The Racers (15-10, 9-5 OVC) are coming off a 69-63 win at Western Athletic Conference member Rice on Feb.19 as part of the ESPN Bracket Buster Saturday. Shawn Witherspoon had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Trey Pearson added 17 points as well. Justin Orr also added 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Redhawks (13-12, 8-6 OVC) are coming off an 88-66 loss at ninth-place Morehead State. Dainmon Gonner scored 23 points to lead the Redhawks, while Derek Winans scored 15 points. Reggie Golson and Terrick Willoughby also scored 11 points apiece in a losing effort.
In the Feb. 5 game in Murray, Willoughby led four Redhawk players in double-figures with 19 points. Golson had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Gonner also completed a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Winans scored 10 points as well for the Redhawks.
Keith Jenifer led the Racers with 15 points and five assists, while Issian Redding came off the bench to score 10 points. Pearson also chipped in nine points and four assists for the Racers.
"Gonner and Golson are both great players," Cronin said. "One is leading the league in scoring (Gonner with 20.9 points per game), and the other is leading the league in rebouning (Golson with 8.8 per game). We have to keep those guys under control."
Southeast Missouri State is second in the league in scoring, averaging 74.3 points per game, while Murray State is third in the same category, averaging 74.1 points per game. The Redhawks had won seven conference games in a row before dropping their last two against Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. Currently, the Redhawks are in sixth place in the conference, behind Austin Peay and Murray State.
In additon to leading the league in scoring, Gonner also ranks first in the league in steals with 3.29 a game. Golson is also first in blocked shots (2.79 a game) and is fourth in the league in scoring with 17.7 points per game. Willoughby is third in the conference in three-point field goal percentage, converting on 28 of his 61 attempts for 45.9 percent. Freshman point guard Paul Paradoski also leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio, averaging 3.25 assists per turnover.
Jenifer is third in the league in assists, dishing out 4.14 a game, while Pearson is second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio, averaging 2.27 assists per turnover. Pearson also is second in the league in three-point field goal percentage, making 47.3 percent of his shots from behind the arc in the conference (44-of-93).
Murray State leads the series 38-16, while holding a 17-8 advantage in games played in Cape Girardeau. Tipoff time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
