Backe leaves start against San Francisco with sprained elbow

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Houston right-hander Brandon Backe left the Astros' game against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday after only two innings because of a sprained right elbow.
Rookie right-hander Taylor Buchholz, who had been scheduled to make his first major league start in Tuesday's series opener before the game was rained out, replaced Backe to start the third after Backe had been examined the previous inning but stayed in the game.
Backe apparently was injured while throwing a 1-2 pitch to Lance Niekro.
