On the course!
And I don't mean betting on the school yard with Timmy in the 5th grade! I mean you first real "action" with "the man".

Can you remember? Did it win or lose?

I was 21 and in a local watering hole. I had started going to this place in the summer of '85 after work with a couple of friends. Well, we got to be regulars in there, and it was never too crowded, so we got to know everyone pretty well.

I remember one Thursday we went in at about 5:00 and the usual bunch was there. They were looking over sheets of paper and reading the sports page. One by one, more people started coming into the place....faces we had not seen all summer. They all got a drink, and a couple sheets of paper from the bartender. Some had magazines, the USAToday, notebooks, etc. My friend and I were wondering what the hell was going on!

We finally asked the bartender, and he brought us some slips of paper. By now, I'm sure that you know they were parlay cards for the opening week of football season.

Now, being young males, we knew our sports. "Holy shit! All you need to do is pick 3 winners and they will pay you 5 times your money!"

Needless to say, it was not as easy as it looked. I remember making 4 $5 wagers on 3teamers, and all of them going south! Welcome to the real world, putz!

I continued to play parlays, and won one time that season. It didn't take much longer to realize that this was a bad investment.

---------------

The next year I met a guy who managed a night club in town. He was big into betting sports. My friend and I went golfing one Saturday morning in the summer of '86 and after we were done, the guy was right in the sports page with a pen crossing out and circling shit. We asked what he was doing.

"Making my plays for today's baseball games."

I didn't know you could do this, too! Plus, he tells us you only need to pick the winner....there is no point spread!

"Holy shit! All you need to do is pick winners and they will pay you!"

We asked if we could give it a whirl, and he said sure. He said we had to bet in $25 increments. That was a lot more than the $5 parlays we were used to!

We agreed on the Giants over Atlanta and pulled out $25 each to give the guy. He explained that there was no money up front. The week ran from Monday through Sunday, and you paid or got paid the next Thursday.

"Shit! You don't even have to have the money to bet?" We instantly upped our bets to $50 each! Since we had the favorite of about -165, we knew we would owe more than $50 if we lost. But, we had the favorite so we couldn't lose, right?

As fate would have it, the game was on TBS that evening. (That was when TBS and WGN were the only games on the tube!)

We watched with glee as the Giants walked away with this baby!

SWEET!

The next Thursday, we went to the bar and each got $50 put in our paws! This was like stealing!

I remember going out and getting a new pair of Nikes for about $25 (High-end back then!), and having a nice meal with the rest.

I wish I would have stopped there!

First real bet with a bookie was in the fall of '83, on the Iowa/Iowa State football game.
I was a freshman at Iowa, and as I was leaving class on day I overheard two guys talking about calling their bookie to bet on the game..

Bookie!! I caught up to the guys and asked them if there was anyway I could get some action as well.
These guys didn't know me from Adam--we were only in the third week of the semester-- so one of them says-- I can place the bet for you if you want, but I need you to give me the money up front, and the minimum was 25 bucks.
I told him I'd have 50 bucks for him on Friday, and I wanted the Hawks. He told me I needed 55 bucks(the juice) and he'd take care of it for me.
On Saturday, we crushed the Cyclones 55-10, and I was on my way.
Within two weeks, I had met the bookie(Junior with an off-campus apartment) and by next fall, I was betting and acting as a runner for him in my dorm....

N.S.W. $1.35 to beat A.C.T. in One Day Cricket. A big favourite! -- totally square

My heart was thumping when i rang it in betting $100. It won! Easy money! Bet similar game and odds the following week. Won again -- this was a great investment. 3rd week I lost! and had less money than I started with. Man, what a let down. I stoically accepted it but still felt like such a loser!

I became obsessed with betting and the desire to 'get my money back'. 2 1/2 years later i'm happy to say i'm ahead.

My first bet was on Super Bowl 1,I was 17 years old & living in Brooklyn. There was a guy standing on a neighborhood street corner that everyone knew was connected. He was a lookout for the local BM & would screen people to make sure they were not the cops. After "intrviewing" me,he gave me a password & point me in the direction of a dry cleaner store.Scared stiff,I walked into the store where an elderly woman was behind the counter & gave her the password. She told me to walk in the back.I passed sewing machines & other machinery(it was a real dry cleaners)& came upon a door with a man standing in front of it.I gave him the password & he opened the door to an outside courtyard wher there was stairs that led to an upstairs apartment in a different building.I walked up the stairs & came upon another man standing in front of another door & again I repeated the password. The man let me in & I walked into this room where there maybe 5 people woking on the phones & 2 men sitting behind 2 desks taking cash bets. After being directed to the right desk I told the guy I wanted to bet $10 on GreenBay.He educated me by telling me that it is $11 to win $10 or 2x.He preceded to give me aslip with the bet & pointed me to walk out anothe door to leave.Very intimidated for a 17 year old & leaving me with a lasting impression.

A guy I worked with was studying a newspaper with the weekend football games. I followed sports, but had never bet. Knowing I was a football fan, he asked me for my opinions on the nfl games. I told him my opinions on the games, he then brought up the pointspreads. Can they cover the spreads also. I looked at the paper and circled my best 5 picks with the spread. On Mon morning, the guy comes up to my desk and asks what are my plans for lunch because lunch is on him. I guess I went 5 for 5 and he played all five of my picks and also put them in a parlay. He made close to a 1000 on my picks. Soon after I found a book offshore, a local guy and I was hooked.

My first bet was with Bowman's. I remember sending them $500 and watching Feist's TV show on Sat morning. He had his superlock parlay college basketball play of the year for the WAC. Me and buddy split the $25 fee and called in. Amazingly, it covered. Placed $100 and got back $700. Soon after blew all of that money plus a $1000 more following Feist and gang.

I bet 2 college games:

Kansas -$33
Kansas St -$33

Chiefs -$33

Parlayed all 3 for $20

Won a lot of money that weekend and then won the next weekend as well......

However, I was very inexperienced at this time (back in '93) and went on to lose money the rest of the season

..........

The next couple of years I went on losing and then Istarted to see a ROI around 1997-8 time period. No one said this was easy

However, with the support of great forums and info on the net I have found sports wagering can be a profitable venture - actually very profitable

My friend's father was a local bookmaker and back in '85 or '86 (or somewhere thereabouts--that was way too many bong hits, shots, harleys, women etc ago ) I talked him into letting me call him to get down on an AFC East game I think it was the Jets/Pats, or Miami/Jets...but I KNOW the Jets were involved.

The final score was 51-45 in OT
It turned out to be the first loser in a 17 year rollercoaster ride of ups and downs (mostly downs).

But since becoming a Madjacker the ups are starting to catch up with the downs

my first wager was with a friend when I was like in the 8th grade or something. UK (big uk fan living in md) playing Gtown the year Ewing and Gtwon win it all. Bet $10 (which was alot back then to a kid).

UK after leading at the half shoots 15 percent in the second half and looses.

Paid him in dimes and quarters and he still ribs me about it today.

Interesting topic.
My first rooting interests were for my dad's Monday night "squares" entries from work, and rooting for my uncle's parlays to come through, as they both shared the profits with me.

As for traditional sports bets with a book, then it would have been OSU vs IA back in '84 I think, at the Stardust in Vegas. A cover on a $10 to win $9.09 bet ( was I a big spending newbie or what ). Unlike most, I've never had an "outlaw/local" bookie or made a bet I consider illegal in my life. It's all been office pools with no "cut/vig" for the person running it, or Vegas, or offshore for me!
