Sunday May 5th,2002. The T oronto Sun - __ Mail Call
I am a Canadian opera singer by profession and though I've been living in the U.S. for the past three years,I sang the national anthems at game 1 of the Leafs- Islanders series.
My best friend and I drove up from Philly to attend game 6 in Uniondale. We arrived early to do a bit of tailgaiting in the arena parkinglot. Of course the heckling was brutal as I was wearing my team Canada jersey,my friend his Leafs Jersey. The comments, boos, and hisses were all called for. However, our American counterparts took it too far. As my friend and I were enjoying a beer and sandwich, an Islanders fan ripped our large Canadian flag and Maple Leaf flag from the car window. What happened next was an absolute disgrace. They took their cigarette lighters and burned our flags. As they did this , many others began to chant "USA, USA."
Do they not realizise how ignorant ,insulting, and classless it is to burn a country's flag? How do they react when they see footage of people burning the U.S. flag in the middle East?
Robert Pomakov - Philadelphia There is nothing wrong with having fun and "jumping all over" your opponent, BUT, man I really don't think 'torching' The Canadian Flag is necessary !!! Hey, yell and swear at the Leaf Lovers(that's cool with me) but I REALLY think the fun could have lead to some serious Crap that nobody would want.
Next Letter from Michael Jablonski - Long Island New York.
I AM A huge Islanders , born and was raised on Long Island. On behalf of our fans, I would like to apologize for our terrible behaviour.

Well at least Michael sees things the way I do. It was a great series, but I can tell you NOBODY was burning US flags when your wild fans came to root your guys !!!!! I don't care if you got 10 'Dimes' on your team, you don't pull a low- life number like that .
:nono: :nono: :nono:
Fun is fun,and that's what it's all about , a rivalry is what makes for GREAT sport or sporting events, but what would burning a Flag from a person's homeland prove or do????????

The lesson here is that you should be rooting for a US team...

Just kidding, burning the flag was definately uncalled for.
The trash talking is cool, but taking it elsewhere is not.

THE UGLY AMERICANS!!

THE UGLY AMERICANS!!

SPANKY, ON BEHALF OF "INTELLIGENT" AMERICANS I WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGIZE FOR THE ACTION OF THESE ZEALOTS!! CANADA IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A COMRADE IN ARMS WITH THE USA!! IF A CANADIAN HAD PERPETRATED THAT ACT ON AN AMERICAN FLAG, I WOULD BE DEEPLY UPSET! I CAN ONLY SAY THAT THE AMERICAN YOUTH OF TODAY CAN'T CARRY THE LOAD THAT THEIR FATHERS AND GRANDFATHERS SHOULDERED!! TOO MANY "SINGLE" PARENT FAMILIES AND VERY LITTLE DISCIPLINE, HELL YOU CAN'T EVEN SPANK THESE WHETNOSES BUTTS! I CAN ONLY TELL YOU THAT A "FAN" IS SHORT FOR "FANATIC", THERE IS NO EXCUSE!

On the course!
Do they not realize how ignorant ,insulting, and classless it is to burn a country's flag?

No...they do not. Hence, their ignorance. These are people who must not remember what happened in their "little part of the world" a few months ago.

Any "decent" US citizens would have thrown a beer on "the fire", and doused those idiots at the same time.

It's probably just that "gangsta" element that Alexei Yashin brings out.

Once the Leafs become the Cleveland Barons and the Habs become the Quad City Quake, this type of unfortunate event won't happen.

I also think that what they did was totally wrong & frankly, when I hear something like this my blood boils.I guess it is called "crowd mentality".As I said before my wife is Canadian & over the years I have developed good friendships with some Canadian people. So if it means anything I too apologize.

Major Marty

I don't think you can lump all of American's youth together.True there is some lack of discipline with some of the youths. But don't forget that some of these youths are serving our country in our war.And by what I have read they are doing a commendable job.I would just chalk that incident to too much drinking.

Spanky.....fully agree with the sentiments of the rest!!! Apologies from this American for the total A-hole Americans :( giving someone some *crap* in fun is one thing....burning their countries flag is another!!!!!

*side notes:

Major Marty

"TOO MANY "SINGLE" PARENT FAMILIES AND VERY LITTLE DISCIPLINE, HELL YOU CAN'T EVEN SPANK THESE WHETNOSES BUTTS! "

okay, yeah, single parent family, but like HECK i'll stop spanking their butts!!!!! you can do it, just be prepared to get chewed out by the old farts at Wal-Mart when you do, and then just volunteer to give the kids to THEM for a few days, and ask them if they think they'll come short of beating them to death :)

Bobby Blue Chip:

QC Quake???? is this the QC that would automatically come to my mind?? are they FINALLY in line to get a professional sports team??

Just alot of people here were shocked by the booing of the Canadian Anthem and the burning of our flag especially when four of our soldiers lost there lives (where Bush pretty well insinuated he didn't overly care) by friendly fire just a few days earlier while they were helping the United States find the people that attacked them on Sept. 11.

It's a sport, that's all and it's taken to an extreme.

Needless to say alot of people have learned nothing from that tragedy, and that is sad.

To my Canadian friends in this & other forums I would like to say I am sorry that 4 Canadian soldiers have been killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan.Pres.Bush,Secty Powell,Secty Rumsfeld & other cabinet members apologize also for this unforunate mishap .How do I know this?Because I have heard it many times from these people. There is an investigation going on by both the Canadian & US military to see what happened. What else do you want them to do?
There is nothing pleasant about war.Nobody likes war, except terrorists. It just plain sucks.Unfortunately accidents happen in war.Innocent people are killed&soldiers die from friendly fire. That is a fact.More US soldiers have died from friendly fire in Afghanistan than by the enemy.Other than being more careful there is nothing much we can do about it.Just accept it.
Bush did not call the families of American soldiers killed in the war,so why should he call the families of Canadian soldiers killed in action. If it is anyone's responsibility to call Canadian families it is The Prime Minister of Canada. If he did that is great. If he didn't you should complain to him.But don't state that Bush or anyone else in America doe not care about all the casualties in this war.Because that is wrong.Americans & its leaders have proven time & time again that we are a caring people. We are overly generous in helping other countries in need.So please stop whining about the 4 unfortunate soldiers being killed by friendly fire because it makes you look weak.
One more thing, this war against terrorism is ALL of our problems. The terrorists do not like the western worlds way of life. They think that the way that Canadians,Americans,British,Israelies,etc.. live is immoral. They want to kill all of us.Although you are indeed helping us find the animals that killed 3000 innocent people, this is a war for freedom & survival of our way of life.

I hope I have not insulted anyone with this because that is not my intention. But I feel enough is enough with people from other countries insinuating Americans are callous people.Because we are not.

Peace.

All I was going on about was the MORONS burning a Canadian Flag at a hockey game. Jackasses or whatever, a hockey game is no place to pull such a stunt !!! Shit, I take my 12 year old to Leaf games,it's a family thing (although with the price of tickets, man,it's crazy)........
So if anyone wants to burn their OWN FLAG ,go ahead ,be an asshole. Otherwise, grow the fuch up !!!!!

My post was not directed to you.We discussed this before in another thread.I have been getting e-mails from people in Canada expressing their frustrations about Bush not calling the families in Canada.I have read on other forums concerning the same thing. After reading Centre Ice's post in this thread, where he also stated that it seemed that Bush did not care,I thought it was time to say something. So I did.

I also agree that people burning other countries flags is disgraceful & those people should be punished by the authorities.

spanky--goes to show no matter where you go, you will never get away from idiots--gene pool is shrinking--even in canada--

"Carolina Hurricanes goalie Kevin Weekes dismissed the throwing of a banana after a game at the Molson Centre as an isolated racist act.

The banana was thrown onto the ice Tuesday night as Weekes, who is black, went to the dressing room after Montreal's 2-1 overtime in Game 3 of the best-of-seven playoff series.

``I know it's 2002, but I fully understand that there's always a couple of idiots everywhere you go and I won't let it mar my experience of being here,'' Weekes said after Carolina's 4-3 overtime victory Thursday night that tied the series 2-2.

``I love playing in this building and playing against the Canadiens. I won't let that dim my experience at all. There were 20,000 people and I'm sure 99 out of 100 are good-natured people compared to one percent of fools.''
