Sunday May 5th,2002. The T oronto Sun - __ Mail Call
I am a Canadian opera singer by profession and though I've been living in the U.S. for the past three years,I sang the national anthems at game 1 of the Leafs- Islanders series.
My best friend and I drove up from Philly to attend game 6 in Uniondale. We arrived early to do a bit of tailgaiting in the arena parkinglot. Of course the heckling was brutal as I was wearing my team Canada jersey,my friend his Leafs Jersey. The comments, boos, and hisses were all called for. However, our American counterparts took it too far. As my friend and I were enjoying a beer and sandwich, an Islanders fan ripped our large Canadian flag and Maple Leaf flag from the car window. What happened next was an absolute disgrace. They took their cigarette lighters and burned our flags. As they did this , many others began to chant "USA, USA."
Do they not realizise how ignorant ,insulting, and classless it is to burn a country's flag? How do they react when they see footage of people burning the U.S. flag in the middle East?
Robert Pomakov - Philadelphia There is nothing wrong with having fun and "jumping all over" your opponent, BUT, man I really don't think 'torching' The Canadian Flag is necessary !!! Hey, yell and swear at the Leaf Lovers(that's cool with me) but I REALLY think the fun could have lead to some serious Crap that nobody would want.
Next Letter from Michael Jablonski - Long Island New York.
I AM A huge Islanders , born and was raised on Long Island. On behalf of our fans, I would like to apologize for our terrible behaviour.
Well at least Michael sees things the way I do. It was a great series, but I can tell you NOBODY was burning US flags when your wild fans came to root your guys !!!!! I don't care if you got 10 'Dimes' on your team, you don't pull a low- life number like that .
:nono: :nono: :nono:
Fun is fun,and that's what it's all about , a rivalry is what makes for GREAT sport or sporting events, but what would burning a Flag from a person's homeland prove or do????????
