So this guy hits a royal at UTH and won $30,000. He tipped the dealer $1700. The next day he finds out that the dealers were bitching that he didn't tip enough.

What would you tip?

I'd probably give a $1000 tip and I would feel generous.

Some dealer in the thread I was reading said that 10% is what is expected. WTF?

I don't care if you are at a casino in the heart of Ethiopia that pays the dealers 1 dollar an hour. Tipping that much is just fucking stupid. And if any dealer thinks that tip is not enough they can fuck right off.

Also tips work differently at various casinos around the world, no matter how they pay the dealers tipping that much is just dumb.

And to answer your question if I was the person above (I am assuming it was somewhere in the USA) I'd ask how they pay out tips, and once I got that answer I'd tip somewhere between 100 dollars and 300 dollars. And before anyone comes in here and blasts me for s shitty tip, just know that there are some dealers out there in the world that make big money and some that make shit money, just because a dealer gets lucky and pays out a Jackpot doesn't mean they deserve some big tip. Ya gotta find out how they distribute the tips, that makes a huge difference.

Oh and if this was in Vegas, those Casinos scam you with all the shit they pull off now, so why the hell am I going to give out a huge tip when they are already bending you over and screwing you anyway.

For the record, I like to tip dealers that are at a table with a bunch of assholes, they deserve the tips, not some dealer that simply gets lucky dealing out a Royal Flush. When people are losing and being assholes, that is when I tip dealers, that is when they deserve it.

And ummm.....the dealer that says tip 10 percent on a big Jackpot can go fuck themself.

On the course!
They would get the odd change from me.

If it was $30,638 they would get the $638

I owe you absolutely nothing.

Oh, and I've never had a dealer give me ten percent back when I lose $5,000.

Yep.

Especially if you are at those Casinos with triple zero roulette.

And I know that ain't the dealers fault, but yes fuck them.

I'll say it again......just because a dealer deals out a big Jackpot doesn't mean they deserve a tip. The dealer that dealt the Royal Flush could be a fucking prick, so why tip them.

Tip the dealers that are kind/generous/professional/hospitable that are dealing with assholes at the table, those are the ones that deserve a tip.

amen to that.

as far as i know, the dealers at most casinos pool their tips. which is fair, but also kinda shitty, because then the good dealers get the same amount as the shitty dealers.

It depends on the Casino, but yes most in North America do that, and yes it is unfair (bad dealers get tips). There are a couple here in Canada where the dealers make minimum wage but if you tip the dealer THEY get the tip, it isn't shared with anybody else. But yes, most Casinos have a policy where all tips are shared by the entire staff (by shift, by hour, by day, by week, etc, etc.) and I think that sucks. If I tip a dealer I want THEM to get the money, not every single person that works there.

I hope he went back there and told everybody to fuck off.....and I hope he vowed never to play there ever again, that is exactly what I would have done.

the flip side is... usually players tip more when they're winning (duh). and it's not the dealer's fault that they are winning or losing (unless you listen to most losers at the blackjack tables). so a dealer could be very good at his job, but he's wiping out all his players and he doesn't get tipped. kinda shitty. in theory, of course, that should even out over time.

that said, I still agree with you. i would prefer knowing that money is going to that dealer, and only to that dealer. it's sad, how much BS they have to put up with.

Yep, agreed the flip side is if you are dealing to players that are losing every hand that ain't your fault and thus you might get shit tips because as you said people tip less when they are losing. In those cases it might be better to split the tips with everybody. That is why the example Jack posted above annoyed me, the tip should not matter at all depending on if you win a Jackpot or not, it should be all about if the dealer is doing a good job or not. And to take it a step further some dealer posted "It should be 10 percent on all Jackpots", fuck right off with that shit.

And I would guess only about 20 percent of people know where their tip is going when the tip somebody in a Casino or Hotel. Most of the time it is split not just to dealers but the ENTIRE STAFF (sometimes even people that don't even work in the Casino). Most people think when they tip their Roulette dealer that person gets the tip, for the most part that is not true.

Oh and on the flip/flip/flip side of what Smitty says above. I would guess if you ran a Casino (let's just say you owned one) you would want to employ dealers that make "zero money in wages" and just rely on tips. You can be sure those dealers would do their fucking best to make your gambling experience the best it could possibly be. I mean if they know somebody at the table would tip em 50 bucks and THEY GET the 50 bucks they are going to do their best to make your table stay the best it can be. And since we all know that most people tip when they win, the dealers will be invested in each "deal/spin of the ball, wheel, whatever" because they know they have a better shot at that tip. Most dealers now don't really care that much if you get an Ace when you double down on two fives, but if they get ALL your tip money, they will.

Note: I am guessing in some parts of the world it is illegal to have dealers rely solely on tips (when they receive tips given to them and they keep the full amount). So even if a Casino owner wanted to give a dealer that option, it would not be allowed.

I'm sure these bitchers are generous tippers in their out side casino lives...

i think i would go back and tip $1 each time i leave the table (edit: i don't tip /hand but when leaving)

I’d do exactly what YYZ said. They’d get the odd amount of chips left over.

That said, I do like to tip especially at the dice tables. If the crew is helping me to member my bets, cheering for the table and making it more fun then I like to keep them in action. The quiet crews that are too bored to even talk don’t get much from me.

This is exactly what I do, and being reminded while chatting with buddies around table or maybe too much wine?? It has helped me note miss come bets, etc. They actually like helping novices like me if you are just nice to them also.

Wow, they only let you raise 3x preflop. What's that tell you?

Usually it's 3x or 4x.

Considering he is paying taxes on the $30k, $500/$1000 depends on how you're doing for the trip. Dealers are entitled whores. They have no control over the outcome of the cards.
