I currently have Comcast internet connection but they are installing Verizon fibre optics in the neghborhood.

I was thinking of switching to Verizon and changing to Direct TV. I was told the picture clarity is superior to Comcast.

Any help and insight would be appreciated.

The main reason to switch to DirectTV is the Sunday ticket.
I'm totally satisfied with the satellite picture and I have an older wide screen that doesn't' have newer technology. In the bedroom I have HD and its fantastic. I was happy with the cable provider in our area, but I wanted the football ticket and with it I get additional channels.

Friend of mine tried out that Verizon DSL and said it sucks. slower than comcast and having problems with computer freezing up. They did give him a free month though for his problems.

I use DSL because I get an SLA with my provider (I work from home). I was curious about Verizons offering because I worked on a project a while back with a fiber company. Their offering was phone, data and TV via fiber and promised 1GB to the house. Personally I would not sign up due to it being a little to Orwellian for me. The interface on the TV was pretty slick (it was all XML) but some hitches were you could not change the channels during a commercial (they claimed forced advertising kept the costs down). To qualify the Orwellian statement the project that I worked on fetched data from the TV box on a desired frequency and exported back to the company for analysis. When the data was analyzed a behavior model is built for your home and based upon that profile commercials are delivered based upon what you watch, e.g. if you watch OLN and ESPN vs. Food Network and MTV then ads that cater to that type of viewer model are delivered, like I said you cannot change the channel. This is not new, financial institutions have been doing it for years, however the ability to update the models in real time and adjust the delivery of product messaging based upon behavior is here today.

Comcast uses fiber optics as well too. I used to install their cable interne and any cable internet should be faster than any DSL out there. In some area's I know Comcast has tied in their Voice over IP with the internet, which is preety sweet. I was told Comcast has a speed of 8kbps, but that won't be introudced till next year sometime. DSL is cheap for price, but you get what you pay for, plus you may be stuck in a contract.
