An EOY CPE course addressed the need to know how to report suspected tax cheats but the instructor also talked about how people could profit from it. The IRS is paying up to 30% of recovered tax liabilities, although the percentages are much smaller with lower amounts recovered.

We discussed the possibility of civilian sleuths beginning to comb text messages, emails and social media for the "proof" that the IRS needs for investigating tax fraud. As is "The American Way", it is expected that businesses will form to become tax cheat bounty hunters. With the IRS cutting overtime, facing budget strains and an overhaul on the horizon for tax code, John Q Public and bookkeeping firms may bring in more money in the future than audits.

The IRS Whistleblower Office pays money to people who blow the whistle on persons who fail to pay the tax that they owe. If the IRS uses information provided by the whistleblower, it can award the whistleblower up to 30 percent of the additional tax, penalty and other amounts it collects.

The IRS is looking for solid information, not an ?educated guess? or unsupported speculation. We are also looking for a significant Federal tax issue - this is not a program for resolving personal problems or disputes about a business relationship.

Yeah, if you knew of a tax cheat and felt like busting them, I guess it would be simple. I'm sure everybody here at Madjacks is in the clear though :0corn

Here's another one

States are responsible for healthcare, medicaid and welfare fraud bounties. Since '86 more than 2 billion has been paid in federal bounties.

http://www.whistleblowerlaws.com/types-of-fraud/

The Federal False Claims Act allows for the recovery of federal dollars while parallel state statutes allow for the recovery of state and municipal dollars. In addition, the cities of New York and Chicago have their own false claims acts allowing suits to be initiated in the name of those cities to capture lost city dollars. While the Federal False Claims Act is a broad remedial statute, certain state false claims acts are limited to the recovery of lost healthcare dollars. This would include Medicaid fraud and fraud impacting state employee health and welfare funds. Those state statutes that are not so limited provide for the recovery of dollars that have been diverted by any fraud including those perpetrated by school lunch program providers, janitorial companies serving schools, and construction companies working on state projects.

Whistleblowers bringing suit under False Claims Acts have enabled the government to recover more than $20 billion since 1986. These statutes generally provide for recovery of three times actual damages in addition to civil penalties for each false statement used to secure payment from the government. Whistleblowers who initiate false claims cases are entitled to a portion of the money recovered by the government. Depending on the circumstances, this ?bounty? ranges from 15 to 30 percent of the government?s total recovery. Since 1986, False Claims Act whistleblowers have been paid more than $2 billion in bounties.

Carl you might do some investigating into your boss, Mr. Lantz. He might have some money he is hiding away and not paying taxes towards. U might be the next bounty collector.
