I've been looking at buying some 'Harley' stock recently. I have talked with alot of people (including Marine) and they really like it.The stock has been on a nice recovery the last while,I'm just wondering if the p/e is a little high.
My feeling,is that the yuppies are going to be buying these "hogs" for years to come and they are coming out with a new bike this year that is supposed to be great.
I just dumped a bunch of Nortel that I got KILLED on,so I gotta put the cash back to work and try and get something back. Thanks for any input guys...Spanky....

I guess it somewhat depends on if you are looking for a high return or good long term investment. IMHO, HDI is a great long term stock right now. But it is trading right on its 52 week high and with a few bucks of the average target price - so if you are buying a few hundred shares with quick profit in mind, I would look elsewhere. Or, if it far exceeds its target, you could be OK short term. However, I really like HDI simply as a good solid American company to buy and hold onto.

Cheers,
Phil

Yes Phil, I would be looking in the longer term investment(3-5 years). I know you can't guess the highs and lows, but I just hate buying a stock when it is so highly valued,as you said -52 week high.
Don't know when they report, but I still want to wait for a 'dip',it's just the way I feel on this one.
Thanks ..Spanky...

harley is at its high point of the year right now, trading anywhere from 55 to 51 the past two weeks. I would not suggest buying it now, but wait for a split, or a drop in price a few weeks down the road. I think if i remember right, it traditionally drops down to the high 30's around the end of spring believe it or not.

dividend it only 8-10 cents a share if i recall correctly this quarter, but the long term value of it is incredible.

Spanky my .02 here & no problems going the other way.. I would not buy HD long term for
4 reasons. 1. all time highs. 2.Baby boomers getting older, spending spare money on houses. kid college ect.3.word - RECESSION
4. As far as I'm concerned 20k for a nice ride you can only use 1/2 a year does not make sense.. & this is coming from a old biker himself.glta

and yup, its at its high point right now, wait a few months, watch it split or drop back down to mid/hi 30's and buy it right back up.
HD has long term consistency almost like a utility stock. The worldwide demand for these bikes is insane.

Don't know much about their stock. But, I do know it's pretty much the worst MC you could ever buy. Talk about an oil-dumping piece of crap. You better know a mechanic, because he'll have it more than the owner. Therefore, I would not buy there stock.

I don't know whether or not HD is the worst motorcycle in the world, but I don't see a lot of people wearing YAMAHA tattos either.

Zoso;

Been riding Harleys since 1969, you are right about the old ones, they did leak and were very high maintenance machines, in fact if when I went to the garage if there wasn't oil under my bike then that told me that I should check to make sure that the bike had oil in it.

But that has all changed now:) ,they are really good reliable machines these days, and have been for the last 15 or so years. now if I go and see oil under it something is wrong. I log about 10,000 miles a year and really can't think of any problems that I have had with the last 3 that I have owned!

The best thing that Harley has on it's side is the resale value, it simply can't be beat. You never loose money on them. As far as the stock goes next yaer is the 100th aniversery of the company, so sales should be up on the bikes, both in this country and abroad.

Spanky--

As a long time shareholder of Harley stock, I'm a bit biased, but I would not hesitate in the least to recomend buying it sometime during the 1st Quarter of 2002. I would only buy it as a long-term investment, not as a quick money-maker. Marine might be on to something as to waiting until Spring for a stock split or a drop in price.
