(Zapote, Costa Rica, 20 JANUARY, 2006) It is a moniker that any young woman would love to precede her name: Miss America. The annual Miss America Pageant will be held this Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be hosted by Desperate Housewives star James Denton. This year?s competition looks to be one of the closest in years as many of the women who will represent all 50 states, Washington D.C , and the U.S Virgin Islands, have tremendous pageant experience as teens. The winner of the Miss America Pageant becomes an instant celebrity and spends the whole next year traveling the world as an ambassador of good will.
Last year?s winner, Deidre Downs, represented the state of Alabama and won partly on the platform of wanting to help cure cancer. The women are asked to show many sides of themselves, including wearing an evening gown and swimsuit, and also being asked in-depth questions by the judges. The women representing the states of Utah, South Carolina, Oklahoma and Virginia have already won preliminary awards in the competition. Although that doesn?t mean they have a decided advantage over the other ladies, it definitely doesn?t hurt to have won an award in the preliminary rounds.
