Yes,

We have them occasionally here in NW Phoenix Eric. Last really bad one hit while I was coming home from work. I had to put my headlights on and had to slow down so as not to drive off the road. And the wind was blowing about 50 miles an hour. Really scary. That was the worst one that I have seen here.

I have also seen them in west Texas. Amarillo is notorious for them.

The Phoenix area gets quite a few dust storms this time of year. And "storm" is the correct description. High wind, lightening, lots of dust and usually just a scant bit of rain drops. Just enough to splatter the car and make it look like chit.

Kathy wears contacts. I don't. When it blows it really gives her fits!

never been in a dust storm, but have had tornados go over several time and have also been bombarded by softball sized hail for a solid 5 minutes. I don't like any of this severe weather!

Aren't they called "brown-outs"? You're sure right about the lightening in Florida. Never seen anything like it. It's almost terrifying!!! There's absolutely no where to go as there aren't any basements. Lots of prayers must be made during those Florida lightening storms.
