Will Smith: When asked if 9/11 had changed anything for him personally, Smith answered:
?No. Absolutely not. When you grow up black in America you have a completely different view of the world than white Americans. We blacks live with a constant feeling of unease. And whether you are wounded in an attack by a racist cop or in a terrorist attack, I?m sorry, it makes no difference.?
"Grow up black in America?" According to allmusic.com, Smith was offered a scholarship to MIT(!) but turned it down to focus on his rap career. It must have been that "constant feeling of unease" that led him to turn down a free ride at the most prestigious engineering school in the world. He had his first huge hit at the age of 18 and has never been out of the public eye since. Smith currently makes over $20 million a picture and is one of the most loved movie stars by movie-goers of all colors. How many times has he been wounded in an attack by a racist cop? I'd gladly take a Rodney King-style beatdown for just half of what Smith made for I, Robot.
If Will Smith feels so strongly about the horrible racist police in this country, I urge him to speak out on the issue the next time he's on Entertainment Tonight or the Tonight Show. I'm puzzled why he would only talk about it in a German language interview. It couldn't be that he's bad-mouthing America to ingratiate himself with anti-American Euros, could it?
